Years later, when Chouinard started a clothing company, he wanted to build something that would help climbers survive that kind of expedition.

So he named his new company Patagonia. And the silhouette in the now iconic Patagonia logo? That’s Mt. Fitz Roy.

In 1968, Chouinard and his friends drove from California to southern Argentina to climb Mt. Fitz Roy.

They had to survive 31 days in an ice cave before they finally summited.
