Proposed reforms are a start, but not enough

"The highest-profile political exchange of the week... [PMQs] does normalise the idea that politics is a game of hurling insults... it feeds most people’s low trust in politics and politicians, which is severely undermining the health of our democracy."

'They should be the start of an ongoing process of fundamental democratic renewal. And on some of the matters requiring further change, the need for action is urgent.'

Excellent words from @alanrenwick.bsky.social

"The core of democracy lies in respectful dialogue across diverse perspectives among and between representatives and the wider public. Such dialogue is currently badly corroded."

We're in London today with a big old bus to tell our Govt this country cannot afford cuts. Instead they should tax us, the super rich. A 2% wealth tax alone could raise up to £460mln a week. @Keir_starmer - invest in a fairer economy. Patriotic Millionaires say Tax Our Wealth

Your contributions to the assembly were substantial, important and greatly enjoyed by the assembly members. These exercises would be poorer without people like you giving so generously of their time and skilfully communicated expertise.

Oxfordshire citizens' assembly on the thorny issues of traffic and transport concluded on Sunday.

Why airport expansion doesn't make economic sense 👇

- None of the new passengers were travelling for business purposes.
- Incoming tourists were outnumbered 3-to-1 by UK residents travelling abroad.
- Almost two-thirds of new airport capacity was captured by UK frequent flyers.
alchap.bsky.social
In other words:
- Little-to-no wider business benefit
- Massive drain of cash flowing overseas instead of into domestic economy
- All for the benefit of a tiny minority.
