Wondering how this one can be made everyone’s fault, in the same way that we all wanted brutal austerity, or we all bought too many widescreen TVs in 2008. The excuse can’t be that AI was too popular and too many people wanted its extremely useful and valuable services, can it.

ust one more example of Copilot getting facts wrong
We asked Copilot() for a list of UN countries and immediately noticed something was wrong. There are 193 countries in the United Nations not 194 so where is the other country? The answer is complicated.

=COPILOT(“list of UN countries, include headings”,”show short name, full name, date of UN entry and continent”)

Copilot has added Vatican City which isn’t a member, only an “Observer” but at least there’s a note.

Even more curious is Palestine which is also an Observer member only but is listed by Copilot as a full member which joined on 29 Nov. 2012.

That means Copilot has two non-members listed and there must be one member country not listed.

If that wasn’t enough, all the Central American and Caribbean countries are lumped into the “North America” continent which isn’t what most people would expect. Different results on the same page!
For no explained reason, “Gold Coast Airport” appears in this Copilot() result (B17 result and below) even though it’s not shown in another result on the same page (Cell B3 and the spilled cells). All it took was small and irrelevant changes in the prompt.

There's a very nice new report from @climateanalytics.org on precisely this: "Hard to abate" has become its own form of subtle climate delay --->>

@billhare.bsky.social @cindybax.bsky.social

ca1-clm.edcdn.com/assets/Clima...
Conclusion
The persistent classification of iron and steel and cement as “hard-to-abate” sectors has
shaped both policy and industrial responses in ways that risk undermining the urgency
and effectiveness of global climate mitigation efforts.
While the technical and process-related challenges in these sectors are non-trivial, the
evidence presented in this report demonstrates that their decarbonisation is not only
possible but highly achievable with existing and emerging technologies—especially
when guided by integrated, whole-of-system approaches and supported by robust
policy frameworks.
A narrow focus on production-side constraints—such as process emissions in clinker
production or the fossil fuel dependence of BF-BOF steelmaking—has encouraged
decarbonization strategies put forward by the industry to rely heavily on CCUS and
offsetting as core mitigation strategies. This framing assumes that a substantial portion
of sectoral emissions are unavoidable, which justifies delayed action and continued
operation of high-emissions infrastructure. However, our analysis shows that much of
what is labelled “residual” or “unavoidable” emissions can, in fact, be abated at source
through a combination of clean technology deployment, material efficiency, and
demand-side reductions.
In the iron and steel sector, commercially available technologies—particularly electric arc
furnaces (EAFs) coupled with high scrap availability and direct reduced iron (DRI) using
green hydrogen—can replace the BF-BOF pathway. While steel production capacity is
long-lived and capital-intensive, studies show that aligning investment timelines with
early retrofit and decommissioning schedules could reduce cumulative emissions by up
to 66% over 2020–2050, compared to just 47% if low-carbon measures are delayed by
five years.

RUN-BRITAIN
Some party leaders are up all night agonising about their conference speeches, pulling them apart, rewriting. Last-minute essay-crisis panic characterised the last time Labour was in power; it was true of Blair and Brown.
This is not Keir Starmer's way. I am told today's address to his party, and to the country, had its big elements drafted by him three weeks ago, before being handed over to aides to flesh out.
It hasn't changed structurally or fundamentally since then.
So we may hear something today that can be labelled, for the first time, as "Starmerism". It will be a British version of what the US commentator Ezra Klein calls "abundance politics."
Klein's argument is that the centre left became too bogged down in rationing scarce resources, which means - definitionally - centre left governments would always disappoint important members of their voter base - which then become fertile ground for the populist right, the Farages and the Trumps, to harvest support.
Instead Klein says that when the centre left is in power it should go hell-for-leather to generate enough for everyone - creating the conditions for business innovation and growth, expanding clean energy, building much more housing, reducing regulatory obstacles to important infrastructure development, and so on.
