worry that we're just circenses, I do feel we have more scope to offer a mirror to the world and proxy experiences of what better worlds might look like. Plus we're not as totally in the pocket of corporates, alcohol, and gambling I guess, and rarely induce riotous behavior. 2/2

I'm so glad you've articulated this. It's probably my most cancelable unexpressed opinion too. I grew up around professional ball sports and hated it for all the reasons you've listed there. I now work in professional theater (though I have to leave Tasmania to do it) and whilst I do sometimes 1/

my most cancelable opinion!

It’s not sport per se: it’s pro sport as a self-mythologising commercial juggernaut, wound up with alcohol and gambling, which extracts $millions from communities. Being a fan can be both the most meaningful thing in your life and the thing which holds you back

hot #politas take:

yes, the stadium is bad because it's a waste of money

but also because professional football is bad

for every player living their dream, there are thousands of punters who trade participation for spectacle, who watch but don't do

there are better ways to spend your weekend

Among other things, fops in drama are often an early form of queer representation, pushing boundaries of acceptable gender expression.

Hey there, @lner.co.uk. I'm pursuing a full refund for a huge delay to my train journey yesterday on a ticket purchased through your website. However, I'm a UK citizen that lives abroad, and your website doesn't accept non-UK addresses. That's a bit discriminatory/racist, isn't it? Any advice?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Another venue I couldn't resist posting some photos from. Some incredible history and illustrious company. And Ken Dodd (I get to throw shade at him twice in the show). #theatre #Leeds #play #musichall
The beautiful interior of Leeds City Varieties. Some of the illustrious footsteps we're following in... Especially illustrious (reptilian) footsteps... And Ken Dodd.

Perhaps, if British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud believes pro-Palestinian protests should be cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims of the Manchester attack, the government could also cancel its arms shipments to Israel, as a mark of respect for the victims of genocide .

I do have a mirror, but I'm away from home (Tasmania via Queensland) for four months and doing a tour where I'm performing in 45 venues then a month-long Christmas gig, so as you can imagine, I tried to pack as light as I could, and even a pocket mirror made a difference! :)

Ah, thank you; I wondered about a Galerina sp. It's hard trying to keep the fungi of two hemispheres in my head (especially when half the southern ones don't have official names yet!) Thank you!

They always say the same basic thing. They are always wrong. And we should do what we have always done and do the thing that needs doing anyway, which this time around is universal basic income and healthcare, and a 4-day workweek.

Sometimes I think about what problems could be solved by all the wealth being hoarded. I think about what could be done for the children of the globe, the animals, land, water & for the FUTURE, if just a few greedy men wanted to HELP. There’s no way to accept the evil choices they make.

It's @britmycolsoc.org.uk UK #Fungus Day today! I don't live here any more, but get to visit, so here are a few species I've found over the last 15 years or so! (adding IDs for all of them would finish me off, but happy to answer if anyone is interested!) #fungi #mushroom #mycology #FungiFriends
Some fungi in reds, yellows, and oranges, including iconic species like fly agaric, orange caterpillar club, orange-peel fungus, and chanterelle, as well as some more unusual ones such as red cage fungus, flame shield, and yellow earth fan. UK fungi species in eye-popping shades from blue to violet, including some relative rarities such as violet coral, wrinkled peach, and ballerina waxcap, as well as more common species such as plums-and-custard, blue roundhead, hare's ears, amethyst deceiver, and wooly milkcap. Even when they're in shades of brown, fungi are beautiful, so here are some including jelly baby, hen-of-the-woods, old-man-of-the-woods, magpie inkcap, and trooping crumble-cap. And yet more fungi, in shades from light brown to white, including some dapperlings and parasols, earthstars, saddles, stalkballs, clubs, and cauliflower fungus!

You can protest against Israel’s genocide in Gaza and unequivocally condemn the antisemitic terror attack in Manchester.

Don’t let politicians or the media tell you that you can’t do both.
