Basal ganglia output is a formidable bottleneck

Striatum neurons project to output nuclei in a ratio ~16:1; but their targets outnumber them by up to 150 to 1.

New paper from me, on how I got to those numbers & the model of basal ganglia output they imply

The Computational Bottleneck of Basal Ganglia Output (and What to Do About it)
What the basal ganglia do is an oft-asked question; answers range from the selection of actions to the specification of movement to the estimation of time. Here, I argue that how the basal ganglia do ...

We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.

Best figure I've seen to demonstrate that climate change and migration are tightly linked. You can't ignore one and think you'll be able to prevent the other. It's either delusional or plain cruel.

A study in Nature Food assesses the future climatic suitability of global croplands for 30 major food crop types, quantifying the changes in potential food crop diversity given climate conditions across four global warming levels. https://go.nature.com/3Dp5LEk #foodstudies 🧪
This is figure 1, which shows the lowest global warming level that would push current crop production into considerable risk.
