Change over time is often depicted as a trendline. But what does shape a trendline? Which forces? Our new paper presents a method allowing to “decompose” trendlines into constituent forces. Also, we tackle an old puzzle: Does culture change “one funeral at a time”? 🧵(1/8) doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Kritiek op AI tiert welig onder vakgenoten (en op dit platform). Hoewel ik geen techoptimist ben, volgt vandaag een een iets ander (en wellicht hoopvoller) perspectief op AI en/in de geschiedwetenschap!

Ooh, highly appropriate for the first day of the year...

A new article by Erika Kuijpers, @judithpollmann.bsky.social et al. on more than 200 local chroniclers. Who were these people recording the passing of the years?

#EarlyModern #OpenAccess 🗃️:
www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Screenshot of the first page of an article entitled 'Profiling local chroniclers in the early modern Low Countries' by Erika Kuijpers, Carolina Lenarduzzi, Judith Pollmann, Theo Dekker and Alie Lassche. The abstract reads: 'Early modern local chronicles are a largely neglected, yet stable genre of texts that can be used for comparative research over time and space. The NWO-funded research project Chronicling Novelty (2018–24) investigated the reception of new media and new knowledge among early modern chroniclers in the Low Countries. For this purpose, we created a digitized corpus of 204 Dutch-language chronicles from the period 1500–1850. This article presents the methodological decisions made in creating this corpus and their implications for its representativeness. The second part examines the social, religious and political profile of the chroniclers: who wrote chronicles and what does this reveal about chronicling as a cultural and social practice? Particularly interesting in this respect is how the chroniclers’ strong involvement in local public affairs authorized their chronicling practices, and vice versa.'

A late Christmas present of the Chronicling Novelty team: our article just got published in the @cambridgeup.bsky.social Urban History journal!

We present our digitized corpus of 204 Dutch-language chronicles (1500-1850) and their authors, analysing chronicling as a cultural and social practice.

The past we study is shaped by what survived - but what about everything that didn't? The CHR journal wants your work on measuring, understanding, and accounting for missing data.

Deadline has been extended to Jan 31, 2025. Guest-edited by @zoeleblanc.bsky.social and @mikekestemont.bsky.social
Diagram in which red dots stand for places where surviving planes were shot. This only tells you where planes can get shot and still come back to base. Survivorship bias: your only information is what has survived.
