How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Literary analysis, creative writing, art history, anthropology. These disciplines help us understand ourselves both as individuals and in community by connecting us with the world as a whole: it's past, it's present, and our perception of its future.

Only a fascist seeks to diminish these studies.

In other words: an English degree helps you think better. And it often helps you help other people think better, too. Which, if you are a fascist as an example, you might find undesirable.

An English degree serves two, main purposes:

1. It teaches how to write stories which both exist within and in reaction to the world and times in which they are written.

2. It teaches how to analyze stories and relate that analysis in a way that elucidates the relationship between art and life.
