Today is Fannie Lou Hamer’s birthday ✨

The cover of the picture book Oshún and Me: A Story of Love and Braids by Adiba Nelson, illustrated by Alleanna Harris A page from the picture book Oshún and Me: A Story of Love and Braids. Text reads from left to right: It's Sunday, and in my house that can only mean one thing: It's Hair Day! I excitedly go through my hair jewelry. Beads in every color of the rainbow! Barrettes that look like puppies and hearts and flowers! Gold clips that wrap around my braids! And my favorite-cowrie shells!

The page depicts a young black girl in a wheelchair, holding up a pink hairbrush in one hand. Behind her walks a middle aged black woman who is holding a pink tub full of hair supplies. They are in an orange kitchen kitchen with rays of sunlight filtering through windows on either side of the room. On the kitchen table, more hair supplies are laid out including combs, a mirror, and a spray bottle.

“I have advocated, and I still advocate revolutionary change. I advocate an end to capitalist exploitation, the abolition of racist policies, the eradication of sexism, and the elimination of political repression. If that is a crime, then I am totally guilty.”

Here’s a little bit of joy for your feed. I illustrated these braided hairstyles for the back of Oshún and Me, written by @adibanelson.bsky.social. I wanted them to look like the pictures in the Black hair books and magazines that I would see at the hairdresser as a kid. 💛 #kidlitart

DO NOT PUT CHILDREN ON TV TALKING ABOUT A SHOOTING THEY JUST LIVED THROUGH

The media who do this are heartless bastards

Doing deep archival recovery work is so painstaking and challenging, but what a thrill to do that work while one’s subject is still around to get her flowers:

in 2023, i discovered and wrote a piece of history that had gone missing: the first black woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show and wrote about it. archive.ph/chXvt

today her family just let me know she won an honorary degree from her alma mater earlier this year. 🥹

You all should follow Raissa for her art experiments coz DO YOU KNOW HOW SCARY it is to do these? And then post it online?

We live in an age where everyone wants instant art perfection, but this - this is what art is really about. Play, exploration, finding things out in your own unique way.

I babysat my one year old niece yesterday. She wanted to sit in the middle of the driveway and talk, so that’s what we did. I didn’t understand everything that she was saying (but I acted like I did). At the end of our talk, she said “let’s go” and “open the door.” 😂🥹
