This is why even from a logical point of view, it is silly to argue non-state armed groups trigger the right to self defence. Aggression cant be transformed into self defence by the actions of a NSAG

B’s citizen’s form armed group B1 and attack A’s citizens, unlawfully

State A claims B1’s attacks are an armed attack that triggers its right to self defence in B’s territory. A claims it is therefore not an aggressor in B

While the US’ targeting of a Venezuelan boat is unprecedented, use of force against drug traffickers in LatAm isn’t. For decades now Latin states have adopted local laws to shoot down drug *planes*. The US had opposed this since it killed a baby in 2001 mistaking a missionary plane for a drug one

Every single overview of the US’ targeting of a narco-trafficking vessel on the high-seas in a Venezuelan ship omitting to point out that this is subject to the jurisdiction of the Inter-American Human Rights System (and what it’s case-law has said of this) is so very “Global Academia” :P
