So... on Sunday Chat and I read the Statement by "Scholars for Truth About Genocide" and... yeesh. Apparently the standard is "can you think of any other explanation for Israel's attack on Gaza that is not genocide?" and you're done.

I had a blast talking about to my old friend and mentor Rob McLaughlin and the phenomenal @alonso-gd.bsky.social about why sinking random "drug" vessels is lawless AF

A US kinetic strike on a suspected drug boat, lawful self-defence or utterly lawless? (No prizes for guessing.) Join @pagingdrpaige.bsky.social, Rob McLaughlin & @alonso-gd.bsky.social on #CalledToTheBar as they unpack law & blurred lines in the “war on drugs/terror.” soundcloud.com/calledtotheb...

This is why even from a logical point of view, it is silly to argue non-state armed groups trigger the right to self defence. Aggression cant be transformed into self defence by the actions of a NSAG
alonso-gd.bsky.social
State A invades State B - an act of aggression

B’s citizen’s form armed group B1 and attack A’s citizens, unlawfully

State A claims B1’s attacks are an armed attack that triggers its right to self defence in B’s territory. A claims it is therefore not an aggressor in B

Yesterday Chat and I discussed the very stupid trolling campaign against @genocidescholars.bsky.social after it passed a Resolution determining that Gaza meets the definition of genocide.

This changed in 2023. Now most South American countries and Mexico have a “Ley de Derribo” - Shoot Down Law. They are all unlawful
alonso-gd.bsky.social
While the US’ targeting of a Venezuelan boat is unprecedented, use of force against drug traffickers in LatAm isn’t. For decades now Latin states have adopted local laws to shoot down drug *planes*. The US had opposed this since it killed a baby in 2001 mistaking a missionary plane for a drug one
alonso-gd.bsky.social
No but please do tell me all about the 6 thousand domestic laws the US is breaching. It’s not like we’re writing about *international law* right?? 😏
alonso-gd.bsky.social
Every single overview of the US’ targeting of a narco-trafficking vessel on the high-seas in a Venezuelan ship omitting to point out that this is subject to the jurisdiction of the Inter-American Human Rights System (and what it’s case-law has said of this) is so very “Global Academia” :P

I'm starting a new series of shorter video essays debunking widely disseminated views on int'l law to improve int'l law discourse online.
The first in the series: why Israel's 1:1 civilian to combatant ratio claim is a myth. Let me know if you have ideas for future videos.

This reinforces my belief that the way to solve this whole thing is to put a booth in France and give each asylum seeker a stamped piece of paper with a queue number and the words “legal migrant” in it and a free ferry ticket
yougov.co.uk
A recent YouGov poll found 45% support for admitting no new migrants and requiring large numbers to leave - but a deeper look suggests that most of this group don't actually want to remove those who make up the bulk of migrants to the UK 🧵/

Seriously, UK?
Sorry I am not giving my personal and identifying data to a shady US private company subject to no regulations to feed the paranoia of 70 year-old British politicians who don't get how the internet works, you guys will need to wait till I am using this with a VPN to send me chats.

New video: Yesterday I told Chat why I'm so excited about Brazil joining South Africa's ICJ case and how the legacy and work of Brazil's most famous international lawyer -Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade- is sorely needed in today's discussion about genocidal intent

Academics have been saying there's a genocide in Gaza for months. What have they been saying and why have their arguments not been at all part of the conversation?

A great piece that draws on my work on anti-colonial law-making to challenge the idea that those who seek to restrain the practice of war simply lack experience of it.
