🧵 I just want to clear up some misconceptions about what Social Security actually is and how it works.

You, as an individual, do not have an "account" with SSA where your FICA contributions have been saved for when you retire. It's not at all comparable to an investment account.

I don’t have a lot of time so quick thread on exactly WHY what I posted about today is so bad. TLDR: it’s like the most convoluted fucked up incestuous polycule I’ve ever heard of. 🥴🥴🥴

First who is everybody? Scott Bessent is the Secretary of the Treasury so cabinet member from hedge fund land.

Plus, a huge portion of our IT personnel were already gutted by DOGE. Many of the COBOL folks retired or took deferred resignation. Regional systems teams were destroyed by the reorg when they were told to "volunteer" for a demotion to front line positions or be fired.

No, that's incorrect. SSI payments are still paid during a shutdown. That would be devastating if they weren't!

Please tell them to start an online application ASAP, even if they can't complete it. There's something called protective filing that preserves the first date someone asks about benefits as if they filed that day. Starting an online application does that.

These are the people who waved signs that said "keep the government out of my Medicare" 15 years ago. They take pride in how stupid they are about how things actually work.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
Yeah, it hasn't really improved since the GOP took over. Now it's designed to discourage people from talking to a real person. My best tip is to call as early as possible and fight your way to the queue so you can request a callback.

I really don't know how things are going at the moment to make a guess. I'm furloughed. Maybe @altssa.altgov.info can say how busy things are right now.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
Sorry, I'm confused by the question. If you're talking about the shutdown, checks don't stop. Beneficiaries are still paid. And if there's an issue with their payment, there are still agents working to be able to resolve it.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
That, and the people we are serving. Once you've seen the kind of desperation that is allowed to exist in this country, it's hard to step away and pretend it'll be ok.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
That was my point about the lack of political power. People tend to picture Social Security recipients as grandparents who would raise hell if their checks stop. That, or have families who would. Reality is a lot bleaker. A lot are the people society ignores who have no one to speak for them.

Social Security Disability has limits on how much you can earn from work and still be considered disabled, so it is possible to work your way out of eligibility. SSI disability has those same requirements, plus is reduced by any other income a person receives, which can cancel it out entirely.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
I agree, up to a point. But there are vulnerable people who would literally lose their homes and possibly starve if SSA shut down entirely. And these are people--elderly, physically disabled, intellectually disabled, mentally ill--with no political power and often without family support.

He'll be filing the jobs report in the same place as his perpetually "under audit" tax returns.

Trump has decided that no jobs report will issue on Friday due to the government shutdown. But it turns out there is a different reason: that report will, when issued, be catastrophically bad.

CNBC: "Very disappointing. It's a weak number. This is private sector jobs for September. The total comes in -32,000. And that was a surprise because economists were looking for an increase of 51,000. Also, the revision was not good. August now showing -3,000 compared to the initial read of 54,000"

If you have GOP reps, call them and tear them a new one. Other than that, discourage people from contacting SSA unless it's absolutely necessary. We tend to get swamped during shutdowns with people scared about their checks, but that just makes it harder to get to the people who need our help.
alt-ssa.altgov.info
If you need to contact SSA, please also remember that the person who's helping you is working without pay. Agency admin staff are furloughed, so they're also without the internal support they need, all while being a punching bag for people who won't take, "I can't legally do that" for an answer.

🚨🚨🚨 SHUTDOWN INFO:
SSA is open and functioning (mostly)!!!! You should not miss payments you are expecting, if you do, please let us know. Field Offices and phones are open and staffed!!!! Here is the list of things we are not allowed to process during the shutdown so please don’t yell at us for it!

Yeah, good luck pulling feds over to your side, Trump. After the last 9 months, I'd be surprised if his approval among civil servants was even scratching double digits.

MORE: Per multiple sources, employees at Commerce have received essentially the exact same message, with the same blame for Democrats.

Not sure if it is being used in every agency or what.

NEW: Per multiple sources, HHS employees received a message 20 minutes ago saying that Trump opposes a gov shutdown. "Unfortunately, Democrats are blocking this Continuing Resolution in the US Senate due to unrelated policy demands."

One source called it "the most overtly political message" yet.

So they are thinking about raising the age for retirement or raising the tax on everybody. Literally anything but raising the cap for the super wealthy.

“Bisignano said generations that will collect Social Security in the future "will probably have a different set of rules."

Love that for us. 🤬🤬🤬
Social Security retirement age could rise under Trump
Along with potentially raising the retirement age, Commissioner Frank Bisignano suggested other measures to address the funding challenge.

This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.

After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.
