I have thought about it a lot as well. My conclusion was that things can't get better if there isn't anyone trying to make it better. Kids are both motivation and hope.

Sure, people *can* use a bike, but is the infrastructure in place to make them feel safe? That's the biggest difference between places like the Netherlands vs. most US cities. If biking feels unsafe, then most of the people willing to bike will be the daredevils that people complain about.
