The hate crime charge against Alexa Wilkinson for photographing vandalism of the New York Times building is a dangerous precedent, no matter what you think of Wilkinson.

“Making her hold flags” seems like strange framing since this appears to be among the lesser — albeit weirder — allegations.

We live in a country where a former cabinet minister can accuse a veteran journalist of being a spy with absolute impunity, without providing any evidence whatsoever, and the MPs & experts present raised no objection

On a positive note, CBC's Ombudsman found a segment on a 2023 anti-LGBTQ+ rally did not violate CBC's journalistic standards

The review concluded that yes, you can interview trans people about the impact of discrimination against their community without giving equal airtime to "the other side"

I believe they are separate and the Freedom Flotilla, with the Canadians, is still sailing. I could be wrong.

But that shouldn't stop the Canadian government from speaking out on their behalf.

I'm not seeing a single mention of the six Canadians on the Sumud Flotilla in any major news outlets.
rachelgilmore.bsky.social
As others, including Ireland, rush to help their citizens involved with the flotilla, here’s what Canada’s government told me of the six Canadians on board:

“The Government of Canada is not able to guarantee the safety of Canadian travelers, or to provide them with security and protection abroad.”

Hi Rachel, We will get back to you asap. Thanks,

In a follow up:

Please see our response:
The Government of Canada is not able to guarantee the safety of Canadian travelers, or to provide them with security and protection abroad. The decision to travel is personal, and individuals are responsible for their own safety abroad. Global Affairs Canada (GAC) advises Canadians avoid all travel to Palestine due to the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip and the unpredictable security situation in the West Bank. More information is available on our travel advice webpage.
While the Goverment of Canada has no plans to accompany the flotilla, this does not in any way detract from Canada's position that humanitarian assistance into Gaza must be immediately scaled-up to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation. We continue to urge Israel to allow the immediate entry of UN-coordinated humanitarian assistance, via land crossings, into and throughout Gaza.
Since October 2023, Canada has committed more than $400 million in international assistance in response to the current crises in Palestine.
The immediate priority must be a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a sustained influx in UN-led humanitarian aid. Canada is committed to continue
