The fact they jumped straight to AI actors modeled after women when, if I’m not mistaken, male actors are a higher labor cost kind of says it all doesn’t it,

Just went to a pretty interesting webinar about designing AI-resistant assignments for meaningful learning, but the instructor mentioned she uses AI for all her communication but doesn't disclose that to students. How can you do that while talking about students being transparent about AI usage?

It would be such a good episode.

Concluded Rebel Ready Week by hosting round 2 of my identity exploration with TTRPGs and safety tools workshop; students loved the Katie gif, and they were all so wonderful and lovely! And then a second escape room for a grand finale. I love getting to create spaces where nerds can find each other.
Photo of a projector screen with a gif of Katie Marovitch at the head of a table in the Dimension 20 dome with text “say hi, my people!” And text on slide that tells students to “Say hello to your neighbors!”

Today’s Rebel Ready Week day was a whirlwind of awesome students! Co-led a silly workshop about podcasts with some amazing colleagues, talked to students about how to incorporate their fandoms into research, and had a jam-packed workshop about using safety tools, identity exploration, and TTRPGs. 💚

Rebel Ready Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year. I get to do the kind of instruction and programming that brings me so much joy (largely bringing nerds together). Today was Locked in the Library, an escape room experience, and Game Changer: Libraries Edition, and it was so wonderful.
A screen says Locked in the Library in neon; in front is a table with six envelopes, black lights, and a single locked box. Amber, with short blue hair, smiles in front of a screen that says “Game Changer Libraries Edition!” Photo of a classroom where students sit in an audience. At the front of the room is a table with three contestants, where an assistant sprinkles confetti over them.

I'm putting a panel together for my class, LIS 581, to have a variety of library workers talk about instruction. I have academic 4yr and community college set, looking for a public, school, and/or special librarian to join us. Message me if interested!

It is me, giving a short presentation on a workshop I’m hosting for first-year students this month! At the best conference of the year; can’t wait to return to the Transformative Play Institute Seminar sometime!

Weeding is something that gardeners, your neighbors, and even librarians have in common. And we're not talking about crabgrass.

This week, we're talking books, getting rid of them, and what happened when one library had to downsize.

The new TTRPG collection is on the shelves at Oesterle Library! I just put in another order with @ipr.bsky.social on Friday using their library support program, so we'll add to this soon. 💙 We're also starting a new gaming club on campus to support the collection! #GamingInLibraries #PlayIsAValidEnd
A bookshelf in an academic library. The top four shelves are filled with TTRPGs. The bottom shelf is empty The top two shelves of a bookshelf, filled with TTRPGs. The top shelf contains several books. The second shelf holds small plastic totes that contain player kits for small, indie TTRPGs. The bottom half of a bookshelf. The top pictured shelf contains player kits that hold tools that work across s wide array of games: a dice set, a coin, a character standee. The middle shelf contains TTRPGS that come in boxes and a couple plastic totes with player kits.

Real bad. I have a whole class on this, btw.

I think the use of chatbots for stuff like this is intended to train people to use it to avoid everything that’s painful or hard. It can write the obituary, the breakup text, the complaint letter. It’s meant to separate humans from their difficult feelings. Seems bad.

New: A few weeks ago, when my father-in-law died, the funeral home asked if we wanted to use AI to write his obituary. So I dug into it and found that it's the biggest new trend in "death care." Tens of thousands of AI obits have been made already. Often the families don't even know wapo.st/4okuxIg

Earlier this month I did an AMA facilitated by @stickydoodler.bsky.social with indie TTRPG designers who want to learn about how some libraries with TTRPG collections collect and process indie titles. This is a thread with notes and photos of the games in the collection at my academic library.

The battle is not keeping AI out of Canvas— that’s already been lost. The battle is giving individual faculty (not administrators, not campus IT, not ed tech consultants) the power to turn it off at will. That can happen through governance and advocacy.

In the midst of all the fuckery going on, I’m glad I have finally been reunited with my beloved Wimbledon after so long. I forgot how much I love watching tennis. 🎾

I used em-dashes before ChatGPT crawled out of math's asshole and I'll use them once LLMs join pet rocks and Betamax in the dustbin of history--God willing.

Stop spreading this garbage about em dashes in ACTUAL EDITED PROSE OH MY GOD.

Plenty of actual human beings know how to type em dashes! We’re called “writers” and “editors” — maybe you’ve heard of us?

M dashes (the long dash) are a dead giveaway. LLMs love using them for some reason, while actual human beings have no idea how to type that into the computer.
They also love sets of three, overtly parallel structure, and impersonal writing.

I really hope that every writer who doesn’t use AI is so enraged that you work on your poem or your essay or your novel tonight. I want a whole library of incredible original writing to come out this

In Visby to listen to a bunch of great folks chat about using games in teaching. And very briefly chatting myself about a workshop I’m doing in the fall.
