The world is busy watching the big dumpster fires but it’s the small ones around that will become the catastrophe for the individual. Reach out to your community helpers and find ways to support them, lend a hand if you can’t give a dollar. Strengthen and broaden your community to survive the storm.

No love lost over the end of 2025…gonna go eat a nice supper then drink champagne and clean my way into the new year. Maybe stop for a little dance party for one. Here’s hoping 2026 has some wins for the good folks out there, and some wins for the environment.

Yes. And translators, badly paid, have been trying to make people aware of this, but they have only a small platform. Need writers and readers to be aware and speak out.

All my foreign language contracts going forward will stipulate that a real person translates.
Deep breath
Ok I'm going to try and stay calm
But I'll point out that AI translation is literally causing translators to be fired (see the whole Harlequin line in France)

People who aspire to be academics: I wish to live a life of the mind

Actual academics:
I have a weird question for the #bird people on here. Do you think someone could tell that a book was pooped on specifically by a sparrowhawk (or perhaps hawks generally) just from the feces? I'm looking at a 16th c. case where witnesses claim books were pooped on specifically by sparrowhawks!

Day seventeen of #ArtAdventCalendar

Tonight I’m sharing this painted stone of the Seven Whistlers. Years ago, when people heard the Whistlers flying at night, they thought of it as a bad omen. Sailers would refuse to sail the next day, and miners would avoid the mines.

Inspired by Thelwell, my pony windchime. I used to pride myself in cutting by hand (plasma), with a CNC I'm getting a result which is literally exactly what's in my sketchbook. Day 14 #ArtAdventCalendar #metalart #steelart #ponies #normanthelwell #horseart #gardenart #windchime

We end today with 27 people posting to #ArtAdventCalendar who did not use AltText, I noticed a couple of folks reposting with AltText...so thanks for that.

There's very few "rules". Post your own work. Don't use AI. Use Alt Text.

If you don't know how or why...here's a thread from last year.
Do I want you to participate in #ArtAdventCalendar YES!

Do I want you to add Alt text to your images. YES!

Please help make this event inclusive.

But you say...how do I describe my art (not always easy right?)

I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

Long, fascinating, and uplifting thread. I'm really glad I saw this 🙂
Over on the Other Place I would occasionally put this thread together, most recently during lockdown, four years ago in fact, and I realised I'd not done it here. So, bear with, and feel free to mute as this is an epic (genuinely, I’m not sure we won’t reach hitherto non-invoked thread limits tbh).

I am about 5 km driving, maybe 3 km as the crow flies from the stadium and can hear way too much of that concert…I cannot imagine how loud and irritating it must be for those on the immediate neighbourhood. #yeg
