We condemn Musk’s Nazi salute. We condemn the bizarre excuses and explanations. We condemn the silence of other Jewish orgs. And we congratulate @jewishcouncilau.bsky.social for speaking out. 💚

Antisemitism is real. None of us will be safe until we’re all safe
The Jewish Greens unequivocally condemns Elon Musk’s performance of the Nazi salute—not once, but twice—on Monday evening at the US presidential inauguration. It is essential that the use of antisemitic and racist gestures and symbols by those in positions of power are denounced by Jewish groups and organisations worldwide. In a time when antisemitism is on the rise, as demonstrated by the series of antisemitic hate crimes in Australia over the last few months, it is vital for the safety and well-being of Jewish communities everywhere that such acts are addressed, especially in their most extreme manifestations. The Jewish Greens strongly condemns the Anti-Defamation League and the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) for their defence and minimisation of Musk's Nazi salute. Alex Ryvchin, the co-CEO of ECAJ, stated it was more likely Musk had been simply "overcome with passion and emotion in that moment and gestured appreciatively to the crowd." This bizarre claim undermines the seriousness of Musk’s actions and allows antisemitic behavior to fester and become normalised. It is also a clear breach of ECAJ’s own policy of deploring all manifestations of racist and antisemitic action and speech. We condemn the silence of other state and territory peak Jewish bodies, such as the NSW and Queensland Jewish Boards of Deputies, which purport to represent Jewish communities, yet have so blatantly failed to do so in this instance. We commend the Jewish Council of Australia’s executive officer, Max Kaiser, for his condemnation of Musk’s actions, as well as other Jewish organisations and their leaders who have done similarly. As antisemitism continues to escalate globally, it is crucial that we confront it whenever it surfaces. No democratically elected political organisation that purports to represent Jewish interests is exempt from this responsibility.
