I've always admired her. She was such an intelligent, strong female scientist. Inspired hundreds of women to join science. But besides all of that she was so kind to everyone. This world often sees kindness as a weakness, but a person like her shows that our words are absorbed better if they're soft

It's really sad. But she has lived a truly incredible life...

Breaking News: Jane Goodall, one of the world’s most revered conservationists, died at 91. Her discoveries in the 1960s about how chimpanzees behaved in the wild broke new ground and represented what was called “one of the Western world’s great scientific achievements.” nyti.ms/42kpGxt

📣 Hot off the press at #ProcB!

🔍 Our study checked data/code-sharing policies in 275 eco/evo journals and compliance in Proc B (n=2,340) & Ecology Letters (n=571). Policies exist, but clarity and strictness vary, affecting reproducibility.

Super pride to be part of the team responsible for this paper. It's a much needed contribution to fish invasions

Proud of this #OpenAccess paper where we experimentally show that invasive Gambusia impacts a threatened cyprinodontiform fish through water quality degradation and competition. Led by @irene-gil-luna.bsky.social, Lluís Zamora and myself @greco-udg.bsky.social @iea-udg.bsky.social. #bioinvasions

1/ Invasional meltdown is a popular but nebulous concept in invasion ecology. It involves multiple direct & indirect mechanisms, yet it is rarely studied beyond simple pairwise facilitations.

In a new paper, we expand the concept & offer testable hypotheses: redpath-staff.mcgill.ca/ricciardi/Ri...

July's meeting of the EcoAqua research group. Lots of interesting talks, amazing research and fun interactions. I've talked a bit about Open Science and we all made some drawings (sooo glad that we all focused on an academic and not an artistic life..haha). Looking forward to the next meetings!

Super interesting talk from @oldenfish.bsky.social at the @iea-udg.bsky.social on bounty programs for "controlling" species. Glad to have you here!

First up, in the article that inspired our cover art, Camila Ribas and colleagues review the influence of Amazonian geological history in shaping the region’s rich biodiversity. go.nature.com/3Cbru1W
Amazonian areas of endemism and riverine barriers. The riverine barrier width corresponds to the average time divergence of sister clades separated by that barrier. Riverine barrier colour indicates the standard deviation of all the clade splits associated with that river

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.

Cont...

A major challenge in restoration ecology is the widespread belief that there is a correct natural community for any given location, and that identifying it is the first step in recreating it. 1/6
Temperate rain forest image taken from the Wildlife Trusts website. This is one of the most contentious habitat types to define, partly because so little remains in Europe, which makes it a difficult target for restoration. https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/habitats/woodland/temperate-rainforest

"(...)the real issue (...) was the systemic barriers—the ways the academic structure itself, with its relentless relocations, temporary contracts, and focus on individual achievement, makes planning for a family feel like an impossible luxury"

As women in academia, having children can feel impossible. Talking about it makes us feel less alone
The struggle is “balancing their careers not just with motherhood, but with what comes before: relationships and planning for a family,” these postdocs write
