"Join the circle jerk so you can start tooting!" I said to the congressman, in an effort to get him off Twitter.

@2avesag.as Are you saying we need a "class 4" ebikes, or that class 3 needs a stricter cut-off (with everything faster being classified as a motorcycle)?

@xgranade Basically I'd argue that right-to-repair and software freedoms should fall under the category of consumer protection. Consumer protection *should* envision the user as an agent in their own right, who bought a product and not only wants to be able to use it, but also share it, remix it […]

@xgranade Consumer protection is the non-nerd way I'd phrase it.

My wife runs linux, but she keeps a windows 10 VM around for exactly one thing: MS Office 2016. She needs it to ensure that grants from her lab sent to governments are formatted exactly right, something that libreoffice unfortunately still doesn't get right.

But man, even windows 10 has so much […]

I can't decide who's less likable - Mike Johnson or JD Vance. Vance has a more punchable face, but Johnson is much smoother at being a despicable piece of shit.

Vance is that edgelord that everyone hates but at least you know what they are; Johnson is that evil manager who seems agreeable and […]

Anyway, as usual, drawing a bright fucking line around fascist shit and making sure that it is not welcome in our communities is a good fucking idea. Fashtech is no exception.

Fashtech is a useful neologism, and I both value it for that, and also hate the circumstances that lead to it being useful.

I am not the least bit surprised. I'm pretty sure entire swaths of NYC have more illegally parked cars than street trees. LIC around PS 76Q, for example, is pretty wild.
On Monday, Council Member Lincoln Restler’s office released a report on illegal parking. Looking at 60 blocks in Downtown Brooklyn this past summer, the report's results were jaw-dropping: there were 457 illegally parked cars every day in a single area of our city.

Illegal parking isn’t a victimless crime — when sidewalks are blocked, pedestrians are forced out into dangerous traffic. So you might be wondering: surely these vehicles received tickets for flagrantly disobeying the law on a daily basis? But that wasn’t the case. According to the report: “Only 3% of observed illegally parked cars had been issued a ticket, so 97% of illegal vehicles faced no fine or accountability.”

Mike Johnson’s position is young pregnant American women shouldn’t have to wait before being turned away to die in the parking lot from an ectopic pregnancy the hospital is afraid to treat
atrupar.com
Mike Johnson: "If you're a young, pregnant American citizen women who shows up in an ER and you get treated and they pay the hospital less for treating you than some illegal rabble rouser who came in from some South American country to do us harm, that is wrong."

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

@glyph Ironically, you know who DOES understand this? Proprietary software developers (and Google devs). Rather than creating a trust relationship with a group of human beings, they simply vendor the code.

"Now it's ours, so we don't have to care about what's happening with its development! […]

You can save time as well as lower the risk of theft by bringing your (cargo) bike into big box stores instead of locking up outside. However, expect to then lose all of that saved time when the guy at the checkout wants to excitedly tell you about his mountainbike build that used the same motor […]

REI is closing 11 stores, including two union stores in Boston and NYC.

I wish REI would just embrace the union.

Totally bummed. I joined the co-op in 1994 and have been a huge fan ever since.

@qagggy.bsky.social I don't make it out to Brooklyn that often because it's a pain to get to from Queens (an hour by subway, it goes through manhattan), and the bike infra has traditionally been crappy door zone bike lanes. Slowly getting better, I can't wait to see what Mamdani's DOT pick does.
