This is a policy with no basis in any analysis. It's designed to look tough. It actually makes them look thoughtless and out of touch. It's arbitrary, mean, and simply designed to disguise the fact that the government is failing young people. Is this what being back on track feels like?

Since the election, there are 37,243 fewer 15-19 year olds in filled jobs. The jobs market for young people is as bad - if not worse - than the GFC. So adding 6% to the cost of tuition fees and halving apprenticeship boost support makes life even harder. Brilliant work National.

#nzpol The government has announced that 18/19 year olds, who live in a household where the parents earn $65,529 or more, can't claim jobseekers support. If both parents work 27 hours on the minimum wage - $634 a week - they will be expected to now financially support their adult offspring. A 🧵

"Youths playing Xbox all day need a good kick up the pants" is the exact same rhetoric as "women having babies for the benefit" and "migrants are lazy but also stealing our jobs" amd "disabled people just need to ~believe in themselves" the message is Only Paid Work Is Good, So You Must Love It

It tells you a lot, the way politicians (not just National Party ones) take dismissive, vicious swings at young people.

a) Their actual target is people 45+
b) Who also hate young people
c) Also they assume young people won't vote
d) So who cares if it's true, it gives people an excuse to be mean

Was surprised to learn on Waatea News recently that the deputy PM doesn’t think politicians should change election rules without a public vote, and am expecting that Act will withdraw its support for restrictions on voter registration any day now thespinoff.co.nz/politics/01-...

But if you don’t live by your principles, they start to look less like principles, and more like self-interest. On Waatea, Seymour left no room for doubt: he believes meaningful election changes should be put to a public vote before they’re enacted. Surely what’s good for the lefty goose is good for the libertarian gander. The Electoral Amendment Bill will have its second reading in the coming months. There’s still time for the deputy prime minister – and the government – to have a change of heart, and show some consistency.
