As she flew, Crow found it hard to see the way sometimes.
She couldn’t help but worry, but she always reminded herself she’d find her way eventually.
She knew she just had to go as far as she could see, then, when she got there, she’d be able to see further.

The very last embers of light hit the mountains in the distance and catch on the rocks of Mellon Udrigle, Scotland. I don’t do many sunsets, but this was just a beautiful evening 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

The journey to Mellon Udrigle beach in Wester Ross can sometimes feel like a pilgrimage, especially if you’re coming up from the Midlands like I am. I often forget how big Scotland is until I remember that the majority of the journey happens *after* Glasgow. Pilgrimage is a good word for it because it does feel like a spiritual return. Up the single track lane and out onto the most beautiful sandy beach, waves lapping and a view that gives way to distant munros. It had been an unusually warm week in mid-May. Perfect for swimming but not so much for photography. I’d occupied myself with small detail shots of Thrift growing between the stones that lined the beach, pink and enigmatic, for my own pleasure. In May, the sun sets late in NW Scotland, way past 10pm. The breeze undulated over the water and I’d been enjoying the light dancing in the distance. Shooting with a wide angle can be tricky, and this was prime. Fixed focal lengths make me work harder as I have to move around rather than relying on the zoom. It makes me a better photographer. I liked the rocky foreground, but I needed the light to work with me. This frame was the very last one I took, just before the sun set completely and the light retreated from the rocks but the way they glowed in the final moments of the day put me in mind of embers, glowing on the fire, warm and wonderful, waiting to be rekindled. The sea had a turquoise hue to it, complimenting the warmth, and the way the mountains were ablaze in the distance just made the image work for me. An exercise in patience, as photography so often is.

On ‘;..p’[[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’   Upon returning to my desk, having left it temporarily in search of biscuits, I discovered my cat had written a poem on my laptop. It was called ‘;..p’[[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’ and constituted one of her more difficult pieces, but it was the kind of poem which rewarded repeat reading.   I was struck by its experimental structure, the absence of line breaks; indeed, not one single space between any of the poem’s 10,000 or so characters.   One of the work’s central motifs – ‘jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk’ – was, by turns, reassuring and unsettling, while the symbolism of ‘###################’,   hinted at our 21st century preoccupation with social media. And who could not be moved by that devastating final line, its message of hope piercing our hearts like an arrow: ‘`````````5555=======================’. Brian Bilston
