weird how college undergrad workers, some of them working their first-ever paid jobs, have zero difficulty understanding this in collective bargaining contexts but I’m asking for the moon—or a collaborator!—when I suggest elected, septuagenarian party leaders to understand this basic concept.

not for nothing, even presuming anyone in positions of actual power wants something better than a completely untenable, indefensible status quo: the first rule in good bargaining strategy is “anchor high,” not “find a lowest common denominator for your side then give it away for pinky promises.”

and, y’know, an enormous waste of momentum, bargaining leverage, strong majorities in a wide spread of opinion polls, ethical/moral righteousness, etc.
