I don’t know who needs to hear this but unless you are literally a WNBA franchise owner, you should be on the WNBA players’ side in CBA negotiations just like you’d be on labor’s side if they were sanitation workers or air traffic controllers.
andytulin.net
lol yeah that part I get, but specifically leaving in the middle of the 9th of an 8-1 game just begs the question of why you didn’t leave sooner
andytulin.net
Why would you stick around to see the Phillies not score in the top of the 9th as a dodger fan if you’re not gonna watch the bottom of the 9th? What a bizarre time for people to be heading for the exits
andytulin.net
Can’t decide if I’d rather they beat the Tigers to go to the World Series and he tells them to carry their ass back across 8 mile or the Mariners and he starts singing the chorus to Pearl Jam’s “Alive” but I know who I’m rooting for in the ALCS

He is correct though it’s 5 of 373 in MLB/NBA/NHL best of 7s bsky.app/profile/andy...

Judging by previous best of 7 series in major American sports, the Aces now have a 98.7% chance of winning the #WNBA title after taking a 3-0 lead over the Mercury
andytulin.net
The #WNBA Finals won’t end if the Aces win tonight to take a 3-0 lead, but the league’s first best-of-7 series will be functionally over. MLB/MNBA/NHL teams have a 5-368 combined record when falling behind 0-3. Shouts to anyone who can guess where that link in the screenshot leads.

Nate Tibbetts would know this if he read my newsletter smh

Nate Tibbetts on being down 0-3:

“I don’t know how many teams have come down from 0-3, not many. I’m not gonna sugar coat that. We’ve got a tough road.”

Says they will keep fighting.

Never backed off this either (I actually brought it up a lot more when they were sucking, self-deprecation is my love language 😂)

Feeling like a lot less of an idiot for writing this sentence lately lol
Give me the Las Vegas Aces to win their third
WNBA title in the last four seasons behind the league's best player A'ja Wilson and a version of Chelsea Gray best described as vengeful over the second half of the Unrivaled season.

I agree, and to be clear that’s the series record not the Game 4 record. Odds aren’t quite as overwhelming for a sweep.

The old adage goes that "the series doesn't start until the home team loses a game," and by that token, the Mercury will be hoping to delay the start of the WNBA Finals until at least Friday.
Unfortunately for Phoenix, the reality is that the series has started and the Aces are in a very strong position. With it being the first best-of-seven series in the WNBA, the best I can do to illuminate the hole that Phoenix is in already is to tell you that teams that lost the first two games of a best-of-seven series in the NBA have a 23-245 (.086) series record all-time. History across all the American sports that play best-of-seven series and have easily accessible records (in other words, MLB, the NBA and the NHL) all say that if the Mercury lose tonight, the Aces are all but guaranteed to win their third title in four seasons. Teams that lost the first three games of a best-of-seven series have a series record of 0-120 in the NBA, 1-39 (.003) in MLB and 4-209 (.019) in the NHL for a combined record of 5-368 (.013) across American sports.
Women can do incredible things that men can't, but I'm not sure coming back from down 0-3 in a best-of-seven series with any kind of reliability is one of them.

Wrote about it on Monday. And the Aces just proved my point.
If the Mercury don't come back to win the series, they'll probably look back at the last eight and a half minutes of Game 1 with quite a bit of regret. Phoenix led 76-71 before letting Las Vegas go on a 16-6 run to take a five-point lead of its own — the Aces' only multi-possession lead of the game - at 87-82 with 2:41 to play. The Mercury scored the next four points to get back within one, then had a chance to take the lead when Alyssa Thomas missed a pair of free throws with 24.6 seconds to play. After that, Phoenix got the ball back down three points with 13.5 seconds to play while possessing both a full timeout and its reset timeout. That turned out to be the final possession of the game as Satou Sabally was forced to hoist a contested 3-pointer from nearly 30 feet with under three seconds on the clock. Even if Phoenix was committed to taking a 3-pointer for the tie at the buzzer, which would be a questionable strategy given the amount of time it had on the clock and the timeout situation, I still can't wrap my head around why Nate Tibbetts wouldn't have called his remaining timeout when the possession clearly wasn't going anywhere. Dana Evans led all scorers with nine points in that decisive
andytulin.net
And Ryan remembers too. I am still annoyed with Phoenix wasting 14 whole seconds on that last possession of game 1 when it was obviously not developing

Becky calls the timeout Tibbetts didn’t in game 1!

This is definitely a pet peeve after spending most of my adult life working around football and with football players, but it’s also a serious problem the WNBA needs to address. Learn from the NFL’s mistakes before lives get ruined and lost in this sport too.
andytulin.net
I know why Ryan is explaining the rule, but if Satou is allowed anywhere near back on the floor tonight, the WNBA functionally has no concussion protocol
andytulin.net
Oooof, that was really hard to watch. I hope Satou is alright.
andytulin.net
For the record, I still need them to have paid Schwarber months ago. There are some other guys who could definitely be upgraded, though. Like the 20% of the roster that might play the right or left field on a given day.
andytulin.net
She was already the only one with three 30-point games in a postseason, which she did for the first time in 2023
andytulin.net
A’ja Wilson is now the first player ever with four 30-point games in a single postseason and also the first one with three 30-point games in the semis or later in a single #WNBA postseason.
andytulin.net
Actually, come to think of it, more Phillies squared to bunt than hit a ball hard their first time through the lineup plus one in an elimination game. But by all means, scold fans who think the lineup might be due for some upgrades.
andytulin.net
Obviously what happens is Nola does his opener thing effectively and the first pitch Ranger throws gets jacked. Phillies have one hard hit ball in their first three at bats lol
