I've been rewatching Zeta Gundam dubbed on my phone for a while on the CR app (the PS5 app doesn't seem to offer closed captions). Tried to capture with my laptop camera here.

Line is "Haman, what's keeping you? The AEUG fleet has encircled Gryps II." Been like this for some time.

182. Detective Conan - The Phantom of Baker Street (anime): most consider this the crown jewel of Conan films (mainly because it had a mystery novelist guest writer) & it is bold in some ways…but every big swing is cancelled out by some negative quality that makes a mess of it all. Letdown. 5/10

181. Licence to Kill (rewatch): more urgent & pretty uniquely dark for Bond for the time, but the setup is rather long between the cold open & right after the credits, & despite flirting with some more elaborate developments, ultimately just settles on a pretty basic revenge story with copouts. 6/10

180. The Living Daylights (rewatch): Dalton was a very stiff Bond, ESPECIALLY here, and this one’s plotting feels kind of weightless at times and just seems to slide off in staying power while sequences themselves last too long, some of the setpieces & twists are novel in a vacuum though. 6/10

179. Detective Conan - Countdown to Heaven (anime): several major details feel like a repeat of movie 1, but this adds more goofy coincidences, absurd stunts performed by children, and a sort of boring central mystery. Black Organization is menacing but fights for attention with main plot. Meh. 6/10

WOAH CONAN LETS SLOW DOWN A BIT

Admittedly the translation seems a little stiff. Dakki says “I’m done playing with Taikobo” in one page and then one page later, opens the door to his cell and says “let’s play” as some pretty limited phrasing. And now there’s “cold-hearted” and “heartless” in the same phrase.

Forgot how chaotic and funny the first chapter is. Taikobo encounters like one of the strongest characters IMMEDIATELY and then tries to run away while slipping in the comment telling him he’s got no style lmao

More new Garo? Higashi no Kairou? But still Ryuga verse possibly…without Jinga so ehhhh
November 21, 2025 at 10:04 PM
178. Mogambo (film): first seems like it will be a stirring, gorgeous romantic adventure with big names and a complicated love polygon, but doesn’t use its ingredients well. A sort of listless safari campaign, uncharismatic performances (barring Gardner) and half-baked romantic conflict. Meh. 6/10
November 21, 2025 at 4:49 PM
177. They Were Expendable (film): a postwar film made about WWII not as a celebration of the American victors who got to go home and relax, but lamenting the hopelessness and despair felt by those who didn’t see an end to it. A slow burn not as pretty & tight as The Long Voyage Home but solid. 8/10

176. Detective Conan - Captured in Her Eyes (film): premise had the potential to be a very interesting reflection on Shinichi & Ran’s relationship & giving the former a bit of an arc to be less complicit & static romantically, but it’s all swallowed by usual Conan mystery mechanics. Still fun. 7/10
November 21, 2025 at 4:34 PM
175. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (film): another Ford film about the twilight years of one’s life, has a liiittle more learned wisdom and feel for aging and wistful melancholy, especially around retirement in the middle of a war and stepping down but doesn’t fill in its romance & world strongly. 7/10
November 21, 2025 at 4:29 PM
174. Pilgrimage (1933 film): has a few nice moments like the old ladies clearing out the shooting gallery & such, but mostly feels like a standard film about a curmudgeonly, regretful woman learning to appreciate life again in a rather safe way made by a not even 40 year old John Ford. Quaint. 7/10
November 21, 2025 at 4:16 PM
173. Alien Nine (anime): feels like it pulls punches a bit, not expecting Narutaru levels of fucked, but it feels creepy enough that it seems like it will promise some apocalyptic payoff with really bold imagery but feels a bit tame. Still neat though, but surprised the anime is incomplete. 7/10

Alien 9 girl is a Trekkie I guess lol
November 18, 2025 at 10:34 PM
172. The Wolf of Wall Street (rewatch): first watched this in theatres when I was a film novice but thought to give it another chance with more perspective to see if my stance would change, but nah I still think it’s too decadent and passive in its critiques still, but very fun debauchery. 7-8/10
November 16, 2025 at 1:09 PM
171. The Crowd (1928 film): yep, incredible. The form is timeless in its brilliance, crazy work for a silent film from the 1920s, a fantastic look at American exceptionalism and the falsities of the American Dream. Doesn’t switch gears perfectly in approach, but still quintessential. 9/10
November 15, 2025 at 10:08 PM
170. Judge Priest (film): has some especially dicey politics which even the remake couldn’t fully excise, not for everyone, but for those versed in Ford’s filmography, it’s another complexly layered examination of the pains in pursuit of community & morality even amidst more dubious spaces. 8/10
November 15, 2025 at 10:03 PM
169. Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles (game): should’ve trusted my teenaged instincts, this was mid as hell. Really primitive gameplay with difficulty you either break or get broken by & a TREMENDOUS grindfest; overcrowded story with ho-hum characters & scattered focus. Overrated. 6/10

Video came on suggested for me comparing the Gozyuger openings, just noticed the blacked out bit of Sumino while it shows the other characters in those ring images. Yeesh. youtu.be/yh8mjyVeI2o?...

I’ve been going in a descending order according to the current RYM user average (mostly just to get a feel for what’s considered “the best” before I gradually get thicker into their stuff) so I am about to get to White Light from the Mouth of Infinity
