It’s pretty striking how this time, Trump’s cabinet picks are basically Celebrity Jeopardy of appointments - every single selection is a character from television. There are barely any Rex Tillersons or Steve Mnuchins, just an endless series of famous MAGA clowns and sycophants

over thanksgiving a family friend gave me an extended guided tour of pro wrestling, a subject to which I had previously dedicated exactly zero minutes of my life, and I have to sort of agree with @owillis.bsky.social that it basically explains all of politics

people think I'm saying "Trump is WWE" or "the wrestlers are MAGA" but what I'm saying is that audience emotion and on-stage performance shaping each other reciprocally captures mass politics in microcosm in a way almost nothing else does

Rosa Parks (1913-2005) helped initiate the civil rights movement in the US when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. Her actions inspired the leaders of the local Black community to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

yglesias actually has no idea why democrats lost the 2024 election - not a single thing he has proposed would realistically have changed the result. what he is trying to do is make his ideological enemies persona non grata within the party. it's a power grab masquerading as election analysis

Dems beat Trump by a lot more in 2020 than he beat us in 2024, and the GOP didn't hand-wring about the need to find common ground with us. They treated us like enemies of the entire country and a critical mass of voters were convinced. "We need to compromise and accommodate" is not the lesson here.

The intense hand-wringing over holding Trump accountable to basic legal and moral rules, the insistence that problems caused by Trump are ultimately the responsibility of voters and must be solved by them… they all run strongly against the kind of reassurances people are seeking from government

“Let’s analyze the defects in Jewish culture that produced the Nazis” is the book you’re looking for here
Yes, it is! Which is why I’m interested in a serious book that outlines the many cultural and political missteps that helped pave the way for the authoritarian charlatan to get back into the White House.
