I'd stay for weeks with my grandparents in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. We'd eat from the fruit trees, so free snacks. And I would just bunk with relatives, so if done right, any trip can be a budget trip.

Newsrooms are a fraction of the size today compared to about a decade ago. There is also less funding for stringers and freelancers today, which means so many stories completely fall through the cracks.
