Having spent the last ten years reading about the energy industry on a daily basis it is wild to see how it's playing out. Much faster than expected. And different solutions.

"Strategic generation overcapacity is a significantly more cost-effective solution than building massive storage."

"Having researched protest & dissent over many years, I find the position the government is taking on repeat protests highly concerning.
Sustained campaigns are widely considered necessary for democracies to function.
The suffragette campaign calling for women's vote in Britain lasted for ~10 years"

Sharp rise in UK plastic exports shows how behind the country is

The EU has agreed to ban exports of waste to poorer nations. The ban comes into force in November 2026

The UK does not have a similar ban in place

Almost 4000 people have signed up to the biggest ever UK environmental lawsuit! Major poultry producers and a water company are being taken to the High Court over "extensive and widespread pollution" in three rivers - the Wye, Lugg and Usk.

A new review study examines four of the most dangerous climate tipping elements, confirming that they are destabilising. Risks are increasing that they will flip and not just in isolation.

Shifts in the food system can help Sweden meet its environmental goals.

A new study shows that Sweden can reach carbon neutrality by 2045 by adjusting diets, phasing out fossil fuels across the food chain, and reducing food waste.

The Green Party is depicted here as ‘extremist’, in relation to the UK’s average voter’s position (as per the interpretation of a 2024 poll). What if the average voter was to grok that maintaining a liveable planet and ensuring social justice were not such extremist ideas?

I lived in Himachal Pradesh and the rains were already often torrential but it's getting worse across South Asia.

"Flash floods swept away an entire village in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand in August & at least 44 people were killed in Nepal over the weekend due to mudslides & flooding".

I went vegetarian in 1970... but after a few years went 'flexitarian' again (though we didn't use the word then) until early 1984 when I went vegan. It felt like I was a late starter then!

I never did! For years I didn't live in the UK. I did in 1997 but really didn't like Tony Blair right from the start, so didn't vote for him. Have voted Green in the past few decades...

And neither do I - not in the past 41 years.

It would be nice to know whether it is a male or a female! I am very fond of females because I love the sweet berries - but the pip they contain is highly poisonous, so don't let any child or other vulnerable person try them!

This sounds plausible to me. But if it’s true, it means that the age of social media might be over soon, with only the old and wrinkled (like myself) spending any actual time there.

Key findings:
- Shifting global diets could prevent up to 15 million premature deaths per year.
- Food systems are the largest contributor to the transgression of 5 of 9 planetary boundaries: land system change, biosphere integrity, freshwater change, biogeochemical flows, and climate change.

Given the massive scale of feed conversion loss in animal ag, if humans ate more soy and soy products - tofu, tempeh, etc. - instead of meat and dairy, we would actually need far less total soy and less soy-related land use.

annieleymarie.bsky.social
Nearly 2 million deaths/year are directly linked to the consumption of red/processed meat and dairy - globally, but mostly in richer countries like the UK. Far more if we consider all the indirect impacts: climate, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, antibiotic resistance, etc.

The North Atlantic subpolar gyre plays a key role in transporting heat to the Northern Hemisphere & is a part of the AMOC…
It is possibly approaching a tipping point...
This would bring more extreme weather events, particularly in Europe, & changes in global precipitation patterns

Massive system of rotating ocean currents in the North Atlantic is behaving strangely — and it may be reaching a tipping point
An analysis of clam shells suggests the North Atlantic subpolar gyre has had two periods of destabilization over the past 150 years: one around 1920 and the other from 1950 through present.
