It’s really hard to describe to people who are not artists how survival mode does *not* inspire creativity, as the myth would have us believe. It suppresses creativity as you try to limit every possible risk – and the opportunities that come with them.

It turns out building habits and stuff actually requires not being in survival mode, who knew?!

I'm also recalling the Sister Hazel lyrics: "if I hurt you then I hate myself / don't want to hate myself / don't want to hurt you"

And like just going out on a limb here narrator but that may be why your ex is not forgiving you

Could be because you're a self-centered jerk

Just a thought

OK, ok, I need to stop being coy and self-effacing. I am DELIGHTED that my work in making lesbian history accessible for authors of historical fiction is being recognized in books that used my work. My ultimate goal is to never again hear an author of a sapphic historical say "There's no sources."

Hi everyone from launch day for A Philosophy of Thieves!

Thieves is my 9th novel & it’s launching close to the10-year birthday of my first book, Updraft. To celebrate, I’ve made my monthly craft essay public, with how-to-writer thoughts I’ve picked up over the past decade.

I would like everyone to know that I am hoping as hard as all of you that Adjoa Andoh will be available and willing to read the audiobook. I honestly don't know who it will be, but she would be PERFECT.

This one is about the intersection of imperial domination with local religious traditions. (Sorry, I struggle to describe Ann's books without sounding like that.)

But it's also a bunch of fun, flawed, incredibly strange characters making poor life choices at each other. You are going to love them.

I assume so, but I don't know anything about the audiobook yet! (I'm libro.fming too, so)

they still don't see "doing a racism" as harming someone else, but as a moment when they might be doing something horribly wrong in the abstract.

I don't think there's an analogy that will help with that. All we can do is keep pointing to "if you accidentally broke someone's foot it's still broken"
annleckie.com
This is where the broken foot analogy *can* help if the person you're presenting it to is willing to draw the lines to the intended conclusion--non-intentional harm is still real harm.

But some folks will still be like "but I didn't mean to be racist it's not the same" because

an obvious harm that nearly everyone takes seriously, *mostly* no matter whose foot is broken.

The disjunct happens when the harm is something a person doesn't take seriously as harm, or happens to a person whose injuries the harmer doesn't acknowledge as serious harm.
annleckie.com
I don't know if I came up with this or not--I know I say it, and have said it.

At any rate, the thing is, IMO part of why this can be a difficult conversation to have is that "you accidentally broke her foot" is generally easily understandable by most people, because a broken foot is

Intent vs impact is a complicated conversation to have with a lot of people
Like "she was stressed, that's why she kicked you"
😱🙅‍♂️
The way I put it to the kids is (I think) from @annleckie.com : if I step on someone's foot and break it, intent doesn't matter as much as the fact the foot is broken
jessothomson.co.uk
May be a bit of a nuanced take from me, but there it is a very common belief that being a racist requires more than just doing racism. That it is a sort of wrong and inherent character trait. Like being a "bad" person, which is separate from a person who does bad things. Often requiring intent.

begging folks on bluesky to turn down the "you hate waffles" energy.

it's a microblogging platform, y'all. no, there's not a lot of nuance. but we don't have to assume intellectual binaries when we read others' posts.

ftr, imposition of rigid conceptual binaries? tried-and-true fascist tactic.
