It’s the same feeling after finishing “Memoirs of a Geisha”—a man, and a white gaijin man at that—so perfectly captured an Asian woman’s voice. Once again, shock that a man perfectly captured a shamed woman’s voice. A perfect companion to “The Scarlet Letter,” which I finished a few weeks ago.

#OregonHistoricalSociety just opened an exhibit on Oregon aviators, which includes notable spotlights on the women pioneers, including native and Chinese Americans.

For an Australian-based restaurant, Proud Mary Coffee certainly had a heavily based Mexican menu—especially for the coffee. The potato hash (with pork belly) was doubtless the best meal I’ve had all year.

Success! I finished my railroad pants with delectable yellow topstitching. #memadewardrobe #freerangeslacks

My nephew is obsessed with #RobinHood (green figure on the right). Noted that he illuminated his thank you note like a Medieval manuscript.

Three projects are in the works, so why not do a fourth? A #scrapQuilt with an #alienAbduction as its center block is now in the works!

A harrowing tale of a cat who loses its home in a flood, and is forced to transcend his cat ways to survive..and make unlikely friends. It was beautiful. I cried. You can find it on HBO Max. #flowmovie

We also used to fly paper planes and throw around apples. Goofy adolescent shit. It was always amusing to push someone's desk until the teacher barked, "What are you doing back there?" I won't say I recommend Detention Hall, but I met a lot of cool people there.

The Psychedelic Rock Poster exhibit at @portlandartmuseum ended up explaining SO MANY QUESTIONS I didn’t know I had from my childhood, full of aftershocks from that counter-culture movement.

How wonderful to see the first cherry tree of the season in bloom.

These railroad pants with the SUPER CUTE AND UNEXPECTED YELLOW TOP STITCHING sent me over the moon for cuteness and price: $295. Yikes!

So, I’m sewing my own version using the #freerangeslacks pattern that accentuates each segment with top stitching with no extra cost for yellow thread. Cost: $80.

A friend gifted me her yarn stash. Working with another person’s yarn is hammering the point home that I’m in a wool yarn rut. Working with the drape and beauty of this rayon pulls me out of my comfort zone.

Bonus: The shawl pattern accentuates the color ways in short bursts of stripes.

“Project Hail Mary” was a completely unexpectedly beautiful love story with space aliens, engineering, and hard science. I stayed up until midnight to finish it and wept at the end. Skip the rom-com and read this instead for your Valentine hedonism. www.goodreads.com/book/show/54...

The displays won’t be in full fire-breathing, strobe-lighting form until the weekend, but there was still quite a bit of fantastic beauty to behold at the Winter Light Festival.

Dystopia at its finest. The never-named narrator has bee incarcerated with 39 other women since childhood. Nobody remembers why they were imprisoned. A reason is never given. The book silently asks: How do you persevere when there literally is no hope? A must read. www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...

I don’t knit with enough neutrals, which is odd because if I’m not wearing black, I’m wearing gray. Finally, I’m making the socks that most suit me. Such satisfying stripes that are going to transition to a wild pattern. Stay tuned!

Based on a true story, “Io Capitano” is a familiar tale of two small-town teen musicians who dream of making it big in the city…except the kids are Senegalese who brave the desert and the Libyan mafia to reach Europe. I screamed “DON’T DO IT!” a lot. Watch it on Kanopy.

2025 is a year of rereading old favorites. 30 years after first reading this book, my inner critic would not shut up about this book being so 1970s weird. I felt like I’d stumbled onto a late-night rerun of Monty Python, making insomnia even weirder. Also? 42.
