High school student gets referred for a spanking by moderator, has mic cut off at Alberta Next meeting. Huge social media action on this. Kid painted as a crazed activist. What about the arrogant moderator? Column.

She sat there when McAllister said it. She sat there when the student’s mic was turned off, and when McAllister basically suggested the student should’ve been beat more as a child.

The Premier of Alberta sat there and did nothing.

If that it’s not tacit approval, what is?

Smith on Bruce McAllister suggesting that a high school student should have beaten by his parents...

Imagine claiming the Alberta Next Panel is about ensuring respect from Ottawa and ensuring all voices are heard, and then you yell at a young Albertan publicly that he needs to be spanked for asking a fair question and expressing an opinion.

Absolute peak hypocrisy.

This UCP government treats public educators like absolute shit, every chance they get.

“Hey - help us ban books by creating a digital library of every book in your classroom. And do that on your own time, without pay. By the way, don’t even thing about striking. We’ll lock your asses out.” #ableg

Dystopian novels axed: Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World... heaps of Margaret Laurence, a class staple in my youth...
And a libertarian like Danielle Smith would be intrigued to see Ayn Rand's Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged on the banned books list.

CORRECTION.

The UCP has not banned just over 100 books from Edmonton Schools.

If this list is accurate, they have banned over 200.

Here is the list we have been provided.

27 years ago, two years after the introduction of effective HIV treatment, the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s lesbian and gay community newspaper, ran ‘No Obits’ as its headline.
It was the first edition not to report an AIDS death in almost 15 years.
The Bay Area Reporter front page, 13 August 1998.
The headline ‘No obits’ is written in red above the lead story.

With fentanyl-from-Canada back in the news, a quick note: Canada is not a major source of fentanyl to the US.

For Edmonton, this must have been one of the least smoky summers in years. It has been amazing!

In the same week it came to light a journalist was stalked…

The highest unelected member of the Alberta government is actively trying to invalidate and suppress pretty much all journalists.

How’s your democracy today?

From story on Alberta journalist intimidation:
When a Globe reporter asked Ms. Smith about the story ... she said “I’m not talking about that” and laughed as she walked away.
In an interview with CTV later in the day, she said, “I condemn it.”

If anyone owes an apology, it's Danielle Smith & Minister Ellis whose demands for info & control interfered with the experts & frontline workers trying to save lives & property.

Albertans deserve better than a petulant Premier who only knows how to pick fights & play politics. #abpoli

Trump threatens to strip citizenship from a native-born US citizen because he doesn’t like her speech.
I hope everyone on Wall Street and Silicon Valley who voted for Trump because he promised lower taxes is proud of themselves

Canada should totally be a member of the EU.

Celine Dion won Eurovision. That is enough to apply.

Hey EU, UK, Mexico etc you guys seem smart, funny and reliable trading partners who don’t illegally break relatively recent trade agreements by imposing ridiculously high tariffs to start a trade war against long-time partners & allies while plunging your nation into fascism.

Wanna do more trade?

Alberta as we know it today simply would not exist without the millions of immigrants and refugees who built it, who loved it, and who were proud to call it home - including my grandparents and my mum. This bitter xenophobia is as unAlbertan as it’s possible to be. I’m ashamed. I’m disgusted.

Today, an avowed separatist leader from Quebec called for Canadian unity.

Meanwhile, an avowed federalist from Alberta went out of her way to make it easier to launch a sovereignty referendum in her province.

Power's a hell of a drug.
