I had never seen 'It's A Wonderful Life'. I watched 'It's A Wonderful Life' on Christmas Day. O no! I didn't really like it!

Warning: Grinchiness:

Watching Frieren and deeply enjoying it for the humane melancholy beneath the cozy exterior, then the theme song changes and it is BUTTS AND BOOBS (and humane melancholy beneath a cozy exterior).

I'm not complaining, but the change is hilarious.

The next day, my friend @apclarke.bsky.social sends me a link to a song he’s recorded about my Florida experience.

I’ve laughed and cried at the same time before, but never both quite as hard as when I listened to the Tom Waits Christmas song Andrew made for me. soundcloud.com/a-p-clarke/c...

A Christmas story for you. It's sad, and funny, and it ends with a song. I’ve told it before but maybe it’s new to you.

I have strong opinions that all the different salads are all the same salad but just slightly different things at slightly different sizes and saying they are different is somehow racist.

There are maybe 3 salads - green salads, creamy salads and what's in the fridge.

I offer no justification.

'The Middle Bit' is such a bast. I do not know what is in this book, but it clearly zeroes in on the most important part. 'The Middle Bit' is the bane of joy!
Released to the world January 2026, the latest from my friends and former #screenwriting colleagues at Regent's University, Phil Hughes and Ted Wilkes. Highly recommended @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social

Funny, I do not remember a 60s Bond girl called Ellany.

She must be in the second half of Thunderball.
If you’re new here:

Friday: Sincerity
Saturday: Hating
Sunday: Bond miscellany
A bonus to me writing something sincere/earnest that resonates w folks is it makes the people who hate me extra mad

One of the biggest mistakes of my generation was putting indie cinema, comedians, and funnybooks on pedestals in general, so that d-tier hackwork felt entitled to the same reverence that the rare transcendent works deserved.

Go back to the business model of buying a cinema ticket for a whole day, and getting a rolling program of shorts, newsreels, b-movies and features. Stay or leave how you like.

Cut the price in half.

This is a great thread but just to say: if it was my call, this film would end with Bond finally bedding Moneypenny, but with him ironically having trouble 'keeping up performance', and her saying 'Oh James, this is no time to die!'. Credits.

If I had my call.
The property has been having a conversation with mortality since the beginning, and if it were my call, this would have been a huge talking point in the press for NO TIME TO DIE.

I keep looking for the people using AI as a tool for expression - as this is the actual path to the future of art - after the hype and the bubbles and the righteous indignation have gone.

This is closest so far:

The very absolutely best bit of Star Wars is when ESB cuts back to the Falcon as it is desperately flying through the asteroid belt to avoid the Imperials.

There's no plan, no complexity, no strategic goal, no macguffin, just deep, in media res, ADVENTURE. All the plates spinning, at once. Yeah!

Letterboxd etiquette is getting me this morning: the balance between only liking reviews that specifically give me something new, liking all the ones by yer mates just coz, and just generally liking any review that's kinda nice.

People getting rabid over movies & filmmakers failing their purity tests and I dunno man. It’s movies, not global politics. If Eric Trump decided he wanted to direct action movies I bet I would watch that shit religiously. Movie stars are knuckleheads. Studios are evil. Find your heroes elsewhere.

I am increasingly against the feature-length movie - a stubborn hangover from a cinema culture of 100 years ago - with its looping programme of shorts, newsreels, B Movies and Featured Movies. Let it go.
