Excellent article, which compares speeches of EU leaders and Starmer. The former talk warmly about shared values, mutual benefits, working “with” each other. Starmer focuses on what the UK got “from” the EU. Encapsulates different mindsets in a nutshell. EU seeks win-win. UK still zero sum.
After years of distancing, the UK/ EU summit marks a welcome re-engagement.

Renewed dialogue is a crucial first step on the road, but Starmer’s speech hints at a continued exceptionalist view.
