SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

I wrote a long article about Rieko Kodama, her career at Sega, the evolution of her company, the games she worked on (including some canceled games and/or games for which she is not credited), the status of women and working conditions in the video game industry, etc.

Illustration: a portrait of Rieko Kodama with some of the games she has worked on. The dominant colors are yellow, purple and red. Counterclockwise from top left: Rieko Kodama, Alis and Lutz from Phantasy Star, Sonic in a maze, Alex Kidd and his motorbike next to Flicky on a waterfront pier, Joe Musashi and his dog near the Statue of Liberty facing a skyline, the three playable characters from Golden Axe seen from behind on the edge of a cliff, and one of the flying ships from Skies of Arcadia.

I'm astonished by how well they sold this in Remake just from the perspective of before they released it I thought it'd be impossible to sell Midgar due to the scale issue, but somehow they do it

lmao. It's fine, like. I got an email and I said "sure, I'd love to!" And unpaid. I think it's quite a lovely little thing I put up, too. I am distant enough from it all that I'm just sort of watching, bemused. I feel for Bitmap but does seem like a no-comms-knowledge panic

woof.

(I wrote the foreword for the book in question and have been watching the burning wreck an all-time grimace)

Although how he would've held up in a film without the utterly ridiculously good Diana Rigg to work off is another question I suppose

Lazenby is great tbf and the way the filmmakers revised history to act like they binned him when in fact they offered him another film but he turned it down cos he wanted to be a hippy doing loads of stuff the 'manly' Bond contract wouldn't allow is bs

I tell a lie, there was just one and it was from, er... Omega? I suppose they're used to doing it every year, and this is their best bet with the films iced for now. Still, this is the first we've /heard/ the new Q, played by the same dude that played Mon Mothma's miserable husband in Andor

Very strange that James Bond is one of the few media franchises bequeathed its own 'day' that fans actually observe (today is '007 Day', premiere date of Dr. No in 1962), and for instance Bond's tux is in the search bar of Windows 11 machines today... and there's no First Light activation at all?

Nobody is talking about it, but they do dramatically improved 007 Road to a Million for its second series -- one of the best lavish game shows around imo

Sure Sonic's platformers were good, but let's be honest - the real reason I'm a fan is because our excellent UK comic was regularly coming out with face-melters like this. Imagine going from playing Sonic & Knuckles to having this beamed into your brain.

Aside from the stupid tie-ins, isn't Gunn also now overseeing games more closely? Like whatever Rocksteady is doing or whatever? I feel like I read that.

Gunn's a big gamer as well -- weirdly, we Twitter DMed about Mass Effect back in the day, ha.

The Fortnite/Peacemaker saga is illustrative of how utterly reductive most IP use in games is. Commodification of characters and stories with so little respect for the source works that ‘oops we put a [spoiler] in a kid’s game’ is an actual outcome.
