Violence over water is on the rise around the world. Researchers counted a record 420 water-related incidents last year.

@petergleick.bsky.social says the large increase underscores an urgent need for international attention.

Colombia is really the only country that is enacting a phase-down plan for fossil production while not being on a long-term downwards trend

Also lol at the idea Norway needs to keep extracting to supply the UK, which has seen a downwards trend of gas and oil cons since 2000

Installing carbon capture at Drax, the facility that burns old-growth forests and is the single largest greenhouse gas emitter in the UK, could cost £30bn in public money.
NEW | A single carbon removal project at a biomass power station In the UK could cost £30 BILLION in government subsidies.

This would cost more than the UK government plans on spending for carbon capture programmes over 25 years.

New research shows climate risk is already hitting insurance and home values. And that’s only part of the story. Some serious hazards, like saltwater intrusion, often aren’t covered at all -- and aren’t yet priced into housing markets. Column today: susanpcrawford.substack.com/p/new-data-s...
New data shows insurance costs rising and home values sinking as climate risks grow
Insurance markets are flashing warnings — even as some major climate risks remain unmeasured and unaccounted for

BOOM!

The UK government has announced that it will BAN exploration of new oil and gas fields.

Another win for sustained people-powered campaigning to end fossil fuel dependence.

(And shows again how far out of touch the NZ Govt is with its move in the opposite direction)

Despite worries about solar under Trump, the sector has not collapsed & prospects look good - hence surge in solar share prices

A lot of tax credits have been maintained, datacentres need power and solar is cheap &fast to deploy, rooftop promising as power prices rise

If you have contacts to potential funders, please get in touch so I can pass them on.

I've heard and read several assessments of #COP30, some of which try to put a positive spin on the outcomes. However, my overall impression is that it amounted to an exercise in kicking the can down a road that leads to a cliff edge.
If you've bashed your head against a door 30 times and it hasn't budged it's probably time to rethink your approach to getting through it.
🧵 After 30 years of COP meetings we are still stuck with
> countries being urged to "voluntarily" accelerate their action to reduce their use of fossil fuels.
> no agreement on a roadmap to halt deforestation

Has climate policy* worked?

There is an argument that CO2 per unit GDP has not accelerated in 50 years (top left).

This term is made of two componets:
* Energy per GDP (bottom left) which has not changed
* CO2 per Energy (top right), this is where the action is
