Yeah, I am a bit in the same boat. Then I confront what historians do, and some of them do not let the lack of facts get in the way of a good story. But there is a good story with much of the stuff--particularly gold torcs, and maybe rhino cliff hunting.

Matt, it is up to us as archaeological and heritage professionals to create narratives that are widely appreciated in the community of non-professionals. What we do and produce will only be highly valued through the demonstration that such materials are essential to highly valued stories.

They had been placed. There was abundant documentation before the invasion of the lobbying by the so-called heritage people to get their hands on the materials that lie at the foundation of our society.

You should have tried coming to Australia 50 years ago. There was much talk then of "Wilderness" and much less of the likelihood that what was then thought wild had an Aboriginal history, particularly of burning. It took a while for the message to get through.
