Super proud of this collaboration with rockstar Ryan Raut - born out of playing in the sandbox in our last year of grad school! Multi-scale brain activity can be predicted from a simple measure of arousal like pupil diameter. Out with linear causality, in with dynamic systems to explain neurobiology
Arousal as a universal embedding for spatiotemporal brain dynamics - Nature
Reframing of arousal as a latent dynamical system can reconstruct multidimensional measurements of large-scale spatiotemporal brain dynamics on the timescale of seconds in mice.

Wow, so great! Love to see this narrative reframed so clearly and beautifully! 🧠🎉

I usually do 2 rounds of segment removal for that reason - one before (big problems) and one after ICA (little problems)
ariellekeller.bsky.social
Good question! I think the main reason is that tools like ICA can only find a limited number of components (only as many speakers as you have microphones), so removing obviously terrible channels/segments (eg. participant sneezes) helps make better use of ICA for smaller amplitude artefacts 🤷‍♀️

✨ New paper ✨ in JAMA Pediatrics! We discuss how understanding the timing ⏰ of stressful events relative to neurodevelopment can help us better identify risk factors (looking backward) and predict future psychopathology (looking forward) at the individual level

The future is bright for this growing field! ☀️ Our review offers recommendations for future studies & points to some awesome open-source datasets that are well suited to exposomics, including those with biospecimen data, comprehensive measures of lived experience, and geocoding by home address. /9

The exposome approach has already proven to be beneficial for capturing these complex, co-occurring, and interacting features so that we can better understand each person’s environment comprehensively. It also lays crucial groundwork for studying the effects of developmental timing of exposures. /8

The broader context of our external environments also matters! Socioeconomic status & access to resources have huge effects on cognitive neurodevelopment. These environmental factors don’t happen in a vacuum. From exposures to experiences to external environments, they all co-occur and interact. /7

We find that physical/chemical exposures, like lead poisoning and air pollution, are linked to poorer cognition and altered brain development. Psychosocial experiences, like family/caregiver relationships, adversity, and racial discrimination also impact cognitive outcomes and brain development. /6
