📣 Excited to share our new preprint:
"Measuring Perceived Structural Constraints on Choice: The Structural Awareness Scale" (SAS)

We developed SAS to capture how people perceive 🧱 structural barriers on their choices in areas such as sustainability or healthy eating.

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x

Was ist drin für #IchBinHanna? Was unklar? Was fehlt? 1 🧵.

Tl,dr: 1.

I don't really get what this research is for. Of course you can't use LLMs in place of humans for social science research. osf.io/preprints/so...

That "polarization" from the right is more dangerous seems obvious given current world events. In order study such asymmetries in multiparty systems, we need an understanding of the dividing lines in them.

depending on where people stand - for instance, more polarized ppl from the left, mainstream and center camps reject dictatorial rule more strongly (than their less polarized counterparts), whereas ➕polarization ~ ➕pro-dictatorship attitudes among right, rightwing pop, and extreme ppl!
Shows a heatmap of correlations between affective polarization and four democratic attitudes (democratic satisfaction, turnout, institutional trust, attitude toward dictatorial rule). These four correlations are shown for the whole sample and for respondents of the six political camps identified before. Correlations differ starkly between those camps, with similar patterns for left, mainstream and center respondents and for right, rightwing populist, and extreme respondents.

...people are polarized along one of three divides: left vs. right, mainstream vs. rightwing, and center vs. extreme.
On each divide, somewhat different issues predict membership in the opposing camps.

Importantly, affective polarization has diverging correlations with democratic attitudes...
Shows correlation networks between party ratings for each of the three divides

In multiparty political systems, such as Germany, it's often hard to tell who is actually polarized against whom. I suggest a set of methods (correlational class analysis followed by latent profile analysis) and use it to answer this question using @gles.bsky.social data.
