⚠️ Introducing new powers to restrict our fundamental right to protest is not the answer

During times of fear people understandably want to see action, but restricting protest further is likely to fuel tensions by taking away legal and safe ways for people to make their voices heard

ARTICLE 19's thoughts are with his family and with Ukrainian journalist Georgiy Ivanchenko, who was badly injured.

We celebrate Alaa's freedom after being unjustly jailed for so many years. He should have never been there.

And we echo his mother Laila Soueif – whose campaign for her son's release was so incredibly inspiring – when she says she won't rest until there are no political prisoners in Egypt.
