Recently, we welcomed a group of stained glass enthusiasts to the Wren, who were treated to a rare peek at the full-scale cartoon of the painted south window. The window was designed by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and was completed in 1775, 80 years after the Library’s initial opening. 🪟🎨

This exquisite 6th-century brooch features an oval sardonyx stone cameo with a female portrait bust positioned in the centre of a gold disc. This is decorated with a cabled border and circles and shapes made of fine wire, or filigree.

In the 1790s a London woman named Eliza Denyer developed a modest reputation as a restorer of medieval manuscripts. She was forgotten by scholars and, in one case, her restorations were deliberately replaced by a man’s. I recovered her story & tracked all her known work here: tinyurl.com/2ktztx2e

After twice failing the entrance exam to train as a naval officer, Manet went to Paris to pursue a career in the arts. By the late 1860s he was one of the most celebrated artists in the city.⁠

Koloman Moser (1868–1918) was one of the leading artists of the Vienna Secession movement, alongside Josef Hoffman, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt.

In 1901, the artist was approached by the Austro-Hungarian Bank to design new banknotes. This painting marks the beginning of Moser’s creative journey.
