I used to read books about life in the Soviet Union and marvel at the ways normal folks communicated in the face of totalitarian oppression. Today I scroll through federal bureaucrats using code words and carefully placed asterisks on Reddit and I’m like, ah shit.

I love all books equally, but there’s something special about older books with pages that are turning yellow, that feel a little brittle, a little crispy. I love books that have been around for decades, letting that narrative simmer.

We have a downy woodpecker hanging out in our backyard this winter!
A male Downy Woodpecker on a snowy day. The males take the best feeding spots — small branches and stems — leaving the females with the larger branches to forage on. (This male isn't foraging, he's waiting for a peanut.)
