The table is divided into rows for basic prisoner colours (Grundfarben für Häftlinge), badges for reoffenders (Abzeichen für Rückfällige), prisoners in the punishment platoon (Häftlinge der Strafkompanie), badges for Jews (Abzeichen für Juden), and special marks (Besondere Abzeichen), as well as columns for various types of accusations: political prisoners (politisch), career criminals (Berufsverbrecher, [lit.: professional criminal]), emigrant(s), Jehovah's Witnesses (Bibelforscher [lit.: Bible researchers]), homosexuals (homosexuell), and antisocial persons (asozial). Text: The Woman in the Garden Riley wasn’t sure when she’d started walking. One moment, she was in the house—the same house she had lived in her whole life. The next, she was outside, in the garden, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows over the stone pathways. Something about it felt different, but not unfamiliar. And then she saw her. A woman, young, seated on the stone bench near the apricot sapling, dark hair pulled back, hands folded loosely in her lap. There was an ease in the way she sat—like she had always belonged there, like this was her place before Riley had ever known it. A little girl sat beside her, legs swinging, eyes bright. Riley frowned. She recognized the little girl first. She was Mémère. Her grandmother. But not as Riley had ever known her—this wasn’t the Mémère who braided Riley’s hair and made honey cake on special occasions. This was Mémère at seven years old—almost the same age Riley was now. The one she had only ever seen in old photographs in albums that Mama would show her at special times. Riley’s pulse picked up, confusion settling in as she stared at her, at the woman beside her, at the house behind them, standing exactly as it always had, but somehow… different. The woman turned toward her, smiling softly, like she had been expecting her all along. "You may call me Anastazja," she said. Riley blinked, uncertain. "... Anastazja?" she echoed. The woman—Anastazja—nodded, folding her hands in her lap. "It means life," she murmured. And somehow, Riley knew she wasn’t wrong. But who was she? More importantly, why did Riley feel like she already knew the answer?

All day, the barracks remained locked down. No work detail. No soup. No roll call. Just silence and smoke, and the gnawing ache of knowing something irreversible had happened. The women in Block 15 sat still, their movements small and cautious. No one wept. Not openly. Grief was too dangerous. But Anastazja could see it settle into the corners of the room—behind Rachel’s clenched jaw, in the way Rivka twisted the ends of her kerchief until the fabric frayed. “What did they think would come of it?” Leah muttered under her breath. “It’s madness. Brave, maybe. But madness all the same.” “They knew,” Miriam said, her voice nearly inaudible. “They knew they wouldn’t survive.” “But still,” Rivka whispered. “They did it.” She looked toward the sky, though the view was only slats and gray. “They fought back. They made the ground burn.” No one spoke for a long time.

While I have much more to say related to this topic (which was the subject of my aforementioned multi-part post that was lost), for now, I’ll share my own Prayer of Remembrance, based upon the original by Rabbis Jonathan Wittenberg and Lionel Blue. El Malei Rachamim Prayer for the Victims of the Holocaust Based on the original by Rabbis Jonathan Wittenberg and Lionel Blue Compassionate Presence, dwelling beyond and within all worlds, grant perfect rest beneath the sheltering wings of eternity to the souls of the millions who were murdered and silenced— Jews, Roma, the disabled, the queer, and all those deemed “undesirable” by hatred— in the Shoah, the Holocaust. May they be held in tenderness, in the embrace of the Eternal Mystery, the One who remembers even when we forget, who weeps for every life stolen.
