🔭 NGC 3521: Galaxy in a Bubble

Gorgeous spiral galaxy NGC 3521 is a mere 35 million light-years away, toward the northern springtime constellation Leo. Relatively bright in planet Earth's sky, NGC 3521 is easily visible in small telescopes but often overlooked by amateur imagers in favor of other Leo spiral galaxies, like M66 and M65. It's hard to overlook in this colorful cosmic portrait though. Spanning some 50,000 light-years the galaxy sports characteristic patchy, irregular spiral arms laced with dust, pink star forming regions, and clusters of young, blue stars. The deep image also finds NGC 3521 embedded in fainter, gigantic, bubble-like shells. The shells are likely tidal debris, streams of stars torn from satellite galaxies that have undergone mergers with NGC 3521 in the distant past.

Visible here is a small portion of the large Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237), centered on its central cluster of stars; NGC 2244. This large round nebula lies some 5000 light years away and can be found in the constellation Monoceros near Orion. In optical wide field images the entire nebula appears strikingly similar to the petals of a red rose, hence the name. The image is constructed from exposures in three very narrow (3nm) wavelength bands corresponding to the emission profiles of ionised Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur to form the resulting detailed and brightly coloured scene. Several striking shapes can be seen here, many of which resemble animals of various kinds. In particular the figure of a leaping Cheetah is very obvious near the centre. These dark shapes are denser clouds of dust and gas, slowly being eroded away by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the young stars in the central cluster. These stars have themselves condensed out of the nebula relatively recently. The brightest cluster members, HD 46223 and HD 46150, are massive O-type stars with stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to have cleared the nebula's central cavity around the cluster. The composite image of the Centaurus A galaxy shows a complex visual structure, with distinctive features such as the central dust lane and the relativistic jet originating from the supermassive black hole, which can be highlighted as follows: the dust lane cuts prominently through the center of the galaxy, appearing as a broad, well-defined, opaque band of gray. This band cuts across the image diagonally, creating a strong contrast with the brighter regions around it. The dust appears dense and opaque, partially obscuring the light from stars and other emissions in the central part of the galaxy. The relativistic jet, originating from the supermassive black hole at the center, is visible as an elongated structure, extending outward from the nucleus. In the image, this jet appears mostly bluish-gray when crossing the dust lane, and turns orange outside and appears as a streak running away from the center, with a slightly curved appearance. At its center, the galaxy has an irregular shape, with an elongated and distorted appearance, resulting from the collision between two galaxies. The central part appears dense and bright, with a vaguely elliptical structure. The colors are: white (visible light from ESO), orange (submillimeter emission from APEX) and red (infrared from Spitzer) that mix in a vortex of light and dust. The white lines of magnetic fields, detected by SOFIA, follow paths parallel to the dust lane in the outer regions, but distort into curves and tangles near the center, where the jet and the black hole influence the magnetic field. The image conveys a sense of cosmic motion, with the dust lane and the relativistic jet as the visual protagonists of this dynamic scene, against a black cosmic background full of bright points.

Three decades ago, astronomers spotted one of the brightest exploding stars in more than 400 years. The titanic supernova, called Supernova 1987A (SN 1987A), blazed with the power of 100 million suns for several months following its discovery on Feb. 23, 1987. Since that first sighting, SN 1987A has continued to fascinate astronomers with its spectacular light show. Located in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud, it is the nearest supernova explosion observed in hundreds of years and the best opportunity yet for astronomers to study the phases before, during, and after the death of a star. "The 30 years' worth of observations of SN 1987A are important because they provide insight into the last stages of stellar evolution," said Robert Kirshner of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in Palo Alto, California. The latest data from these powerful telescopes indicate that SN 1987A has passed an important threshold. The supernova shock wave is moving beyond the dense ring of gas produced late in the life of the pre-supernova star when a fast outflow or wind from the star collided with a slower wind generated in an earlier red giant phase of the star's evolution. These ever-expanding clouds of gas and dust were ejected by a dying Sun-like star. (Look for its core by finding the central white dot.) This Hubble view of NGC 6210 was released in 2010. The planetary nebula is located about 6,500 light-years away.

The majority of the blob appears bright blue. Within that, there is a slightly smaller and brighter blue shape that looks like the profile of a horse’s head. This pink material appears denser and looks like jagged, short lines atop one another. There is a tiny area of pink to the lower left, where a horse’s nose would be.
