It's notable that humanities and social sciences once again make up 50% of ERC starting awards in Ireland (a notably higher proportion than in other countries) despite the weak financial support for research in these disciplines nationally. We should fund what we're good at!

Not to be obnoxious and do the "as a historian" thing but I never honestly thought that my research/teaching on the histories of eugenics would ever be as acutely relevant in understanding the present, and goddess knows, I wish it wasn't the case

And this is exactly what is so insidious about eugenics: these ideas have persisted and are encouraged, but too often we balk at calling eugenicist ideas and people exactly what they are. Not to mention too many people don’t know what positive eugenics is, or that eugenics is not just Nazis.
louiseseamster.bsky.social
And a point on that: I have had some weird replies in previous months where people seem to think eugenics needs to actually “work” to be eugenics. But it’s an *idea* and a *project*. Of course all the initiatives and “science” for increasing intelligence etc. are phony.

June is Refugee Awareness Month.

This month, we’re sharing stories that matter—like You Don't Know What War Is by Yeva Skalietska.

At just 12 years old, Yeva fled war-torn Ukraine. Her diary is a raw, unforgettable account of survival and courage. @costprogramme.bsky.social
