The inactivity rate for people aged 16 to 64 in July 2025 was 21%, lower than at any point before Nov 2018. Since 1971, there has been only one 15-month period – Dec 2018 to Feb 2020 – when inactivity was lower than today.

I think we can safely stop listening to the whinging from private schools about the terrible effects of VAT on private school fees: pupil numbers down 1.7% in the context of declining numbers of children in that age range does not make a policy apocalypse
