For National Black Dog Day, Tycho did his best alligator impression.
Black dog lying in the middle of a river. His tail is curved up. There are rocks in the foreground and trees in the background. The furthest back trees are illuminated by sun light that also glints off the river.

Is this color good for the harbor? I’m not sure I’ve seen it so clear or this green.

#Baltimore #water #turtle
Baltimore harbor near Fells Point. The water is a greenish tint to it but also mostly transparent. There is a turtle swimming in the foreground, empty docks to the right, and a number of sail boats and speed boats to the left. Brick row houses can be seen behind them with the ports further in the distance. A medium sized turtle swimming in the water. The water is transparent with green tint so that the turtle is fully visible. It is sticking up its head while paddling with its feet.

It is 21 F and I just saw two people biking down Boston St in Baltimore!

My bigger concern wasn’t the weather (as people bike in all weather), it was that it is dark out and Boston St is a very busy street (they both had lights).

Here’s a handsome dog enjoying the snow for your timeline.
Black dog in a blue coat stepping onto a frozen stream in the woods. The trees are bare of leaves and there’s snow on the ground.

Just an owl hanging out in Baltimore on a Saturday night

An owl sitting on a branch with many other branches around it. It is grey with brown stripes. Jupiter can be seen behind it in the blue grey sky.

Enjoyed Katie Kaleida’s poster on JWST data management system: JWST has produced over 400 TB of data since launch and use over 100 computing nodes to process the data.

Congratulations to ESA and the Gaia team members! The survey is a great example of what can be done with open data with so much amazing science and so much still to be done!

The ESA #Gaia mission has delivered the best Milky Way maps to date and taken its last starlight before spacecraft retirement 🔭

A model image of what our home galaxy, the Milky Way, might look like face-on: as viewed from above the disc of the galaxy, with its spiral arms and bulge in full view. In the centre of the galaxy, the bulge shines as a hazy oval, emitting a faint golden gleam. Starting at the central bulge, several glistening spiral arms coil outwards, creating a perfectly circle-shaped spiral. They give the impression of someone having sprinkled pastel purple glitter on the pitch-black background, in the shape of sparkling, curled-up snakes. A model image of what our home galaxy, the Milky Way, might look like edge-on, against a pitch-black backdrop. The Milky Way’s disc appears in the centre of the image, as a thin, dark-brown line spanning from left to right, with the hint of a wave in it. The line appears to be etched into a thin glowing layer of silver sand, that makes it look as if it was drawn with a coloured pencil on coarse paper. The bulge of the galaxy sits like a glowing, see-through pearl in the shape of a sphere in the centre of this brown line

If you ever get down on yourself when you see a well-published paper using an idea you thought of but didn't pursue, remember that your well-published papers might be using ideas that others thought of but didn't pursue.

Pandemonium in Patterson Park this evening but it was easy to wander off to find the quiet areas to listen to the falling snow.

#Baltimore
The Observatory in Patterson park which is shaped like a pagoda. It is lit up with blue and green lights. There is a snow covered hill in front covered with people sledding down it and a large crowd of people at the top The Patterson park fountain with blue and purple light. The observatory is in the background from the other side. The fountain is filled with smooth snow and there are flakes falling down from the sky. The Patterson park pond - it looks to be frozen over with snow covered trees at the edges. It’s a color photo that is almost completely all greys. A snowy path lined with snow covered trees. The sky is grey and cloudy. The trees appear to be almost black in this light. The path is well trodden but still think with snow.

Astounding that astronomer and activist Frank Kameny went from organizing the first White House pickets for gay rights in 1965 to the first official White House meeting between gay rights advocates and West Wing staffers in the Carter administration just a dozen years later.
