Unless their ability to develop speech, language and communication skills is prioritised, children from areas of disadvantage or with special needs are being set up to fail - our letter in today's Daily Mail:
Image of printed clipping from the Daily Mail, showing a letter to editor from Jane Harris, CEO of Speech and Language UK, about the absence of speech and language skills in the interim curriculum review.

Agreed! How brave are people feeling after our amazing and uplifting day at #NAPLIC25?! Are we up for raising concerns with service leaders?! The examples shared by @1hannahharvey.bsky.social and team are pretty compelling and speak for themselves. Leaders DO welcome insight into impact! 🤝

This is by no means the right or only approach, but I’m a big believer in being open about what we are - or might be - exploring from early on in the assessment process. If we think #DevLangDis, some early info, sensitively introduced, might help families & individuals feel part of the process 💜💛💜

Clear message today from @amandafiner.bsky.social - chn & YP need more TIME to process and express their views & we need to really listen. The questions make me think of the phrase “every interaction is an intervention” - can’t underestimate the power of listening and talking #DevLangDis #NAPLIC25

Perfect! 👌 We need similar for Developmental Language Disorder - it’s neurodevelopmental and affects 7.6% of children. At #NAPLIC25 we heard @1hannahharvey.bsky.social’s research on parent perspectives. No.1 priority for parents: to understand - What is #DevLangDis?

The diagnostic conversation with families needs to be handled with care when diagnosing DLD. @1hannahharvey.bsky.social's research revealed some 'varied' family experiences.

Jaw-dropping is exactly the word. SaLTs are experts in good communication! So it was a horrifying realisation (among others) that there are SaLT teams who are restricted to having this conversation - a key moment in a child and family’s life - over a phone call 😔

'DLD and me' is a useful tool for deepening understanding of self. From this self advocacy can grow.
One student made a list of strategies to give to supply teachers. But these strategies need to be personalised #DevLangDis #NAPLIC25

Parent perspectives of DLD diagnosis at #NAPLIC25… We need to think carefully about the process of delivering a diagnosis of #DevLangDis… It’s important that we get this right 💜

DLD really impacts, as Tanaya explains here. Teachers think she hasn't done her work when it is the DLD that makes it hard for her to show her learning. Frustrating! #NAPLIC25 #DevLangDis

The DLD diagnosis has had a very positive impact, allowing Tanaya to understand herself, advocate for herself and develop strategies for herself. And win acting awards! #NAPLIC25 #DevLangDis

Abraz Hussein, an adult with DLD tells his story. He got through primary without much support, but at start of secondary was permanently excluded. Then went to PRU before getting diagnosed and going to a special school for speech and language. Support makes all the difference!

Mainstream schools don't know enough about DLD.
Post 16 was very positive as could follow interest in sport and friends were very understanding

Abraz volunteered at a youth club and then got a job. Advice to other young people with DLD is to volunteer: rewarding and hopefully get a job offer. #NAPLIC25
atimetotalk-salt.bsky.social
It took permanent exclusion and PRU placement for Abraz to get a a diagnosis of #DevLangDis before needs could be met in education. Subsequently he achieved top results at college, has a degree in social work and is the most inspirational guy!! 🙏🌟 Recognising #SLCN can be life changing #NAPLIC25

And this is why we’re here at #NAPLIC25… Tanaya brilliantly shared her experiences as a young adult with DLD. Sadly she is not alone in her experiences of the education system with #DevLangDis But oh wow! Not a dry eye in the house after that amazing song!! 🤩 Thank you Tanaya!! 🌟 🙏 🙏

So excited to be at #NAPLIC25 - always feels like one big family here! #DevLangDis 💜💛💜

The #InvestInSLT debate was a great moment of recognition for speech & language therapists across our broad + brilliant profession! A massive achievement! Thanks @mikeys-wish.bsky.social 🙌 🙏 Dave Robertson MP did us proud! 👏 (Poignant for me - I cut my teeth as a therapist in his neck of the woods!)

Counting blessings and holding tight to heros for a bit of stability in a wobbly world… & sharing admiration for this inspirational woman. Proud to be part of a profession driven so significantly by women and grateful to those who came before & fought for pay equality 💪 youtu.be/CCRRe72mwwY?...
