This incident alone would have triggered hearings and probably a senior-level resignation in another administration.
This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

History shows that democracies unravel when leaders recast their own citizens as enemies. That’s the moment we’re living in. My new TIME essay looks at how the Trump administration’s rhetoric is being used to justify violence, dodge accountability, and weaken the meaning of citizenship.
The Danger of Turning Americans into Enemies
In Minnesota, "Trump has redefined dissent not as a civic act, but as an enemy force," writes Andrew Weinstein.

When truth-tellers are jailed and killers are shielded, you’re not in a democracy—you’re in a regime. That’s where we are.
Why This Moment Demands Our Attention
A look at how political language in the U.S. is shifting toward labeling fellow Americans as “enemies”—and why that shift matters for all of us.

I'm told that Trump has posted on Truth Social something like forty times in the last twenty minutes—which is a good excuse for me to trot out a reminder about this useful tool:
Hey, political journalists on Bluesky: If you ever need to find a specific Trump Truth Social post—since searching through them is so difficult—one of my colleagues built this comprehensive database a few months ago. *Super* helpful.

Amid these dark moments, something important is beginning to shift.

It's clearly the result of healthy political pressure - which we must sustain, and build.

This is the grim, depressing reality Donald Trump has made of American life.

Instead of waking up on a Saturday, relaxing and spending time with your loved ones, you now have to watch American towns being ravaged and their citizens being murdered by violent secret police. All because of one man.

NEW: In this interview, Chuck Schumer describes the "five buckets" Dems think are key to their possibly winning a Senate majority in 2026: housing, "the high price of food [and] food monopolies playing a major role there," electricity, "the high cost of childcare," and health care.
Zero Chucks Left to Give
Chuck Schumer now sees a path back to the majority. Can he manage his way through it?

You’d have to think Trump has suddenly started mapping out game theory possibilities on an Ivy League window as opposed to making snap decisions based on the last person he talked to and whatever he think is best for him in the moment. Color me skeptical an old dog learned new tricks.
There’s a narrative that Gaetz was a deliberate head-fake — a distraction to boost the real candidate — but I am always suspicious of narratives that attribute four-dimensional chess to trump as opposed to knocking over the table and eating the checkers.
