41, autistic enby. Self diagnosis is valid, vaccines don't cause autism. My autism defines me. Yes it does. Pronouns are they/them or she/her.
I hear a lot of people say "I don't see the problem" or similar things.

Q3: What are your experiences communicating with other people around pain? #AutChat
December 7, 2025 at 9:32 PM
The thing I'm thinking about most is my ability (or lack thereof) to communicate to others about the pain in a way that I feel like I'm understood, and that there's a path to treat the pain.

But sometimes I feel like nobody notices it... so I just learn to live with it, I guess...

#AutChat A2
Q2: Does autism (or a similar disability/disabilities) affect your ability to manage pain?

If so, how?

#AutChat
December 7, 2025 at 9:17 PM
I don't know how to describe it... it's more like, I notice when a source of pain suddenly goes away, but when it's there, that's just familiar background noise.

Like... if I have cavities in my teeth that cause me pain, I notice the absence of pain when they're fixed.

Q1: What similarities and differences have you noticed, relative to neurotypical people, in your experiences of physical pain? #AutChat

We used to post Wakelet transcripts of our weekly Twitter chats to autchat.com. We also linked to them on the #AutChat tag and on Facebook.

However, at this point in our transition to BlueSky, we don’t know how to integrate Wakelet/similar. For the time being, we do not make transcripts.

#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc).

We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.

I most certainly do.

Although it’s hard to explain… I feel like a lot of it is closely related to other things.

Like, I feel this most exactly three hours after I drink coffee.

I don’t understand why.

Q1. Do you experience rejection sensitivity (or rejection sensitivity dysphoria)? What is it like? Share as much as you want. #AutChat

Conversations about rejection sensitivity and rejection sensitivity dysphoria may bring up distressful topics, especially when talking about traumatic incidents that triggered it. #AutChat

Rejection sensitivity and rejection sensitivity dysphoria means hypersensitivity to criticism (or anything that could be perceived as criticism), associated with intense feelings of rejection.

All I've been able to do right now is alone thinking kind of emotional processing.

I don't have a ton of practical use experience trying to put these ideas to a test or anything.

#AutChat A5
Q5: Have you developed strategies for improving your emotional self-awareness or working around these impairments? #AutChat
November 23, 2025 at 9:49 PM
People say to me "why didn't you say anything back then?" and they don't understand why I literally couldn't.

And then it transforms into a conversation about how I was wrong to not say anything when it first came up.

It's like my afterthoughts don't matter.

#AutChat A4
Q4: Do your differences in emotional processing cause problems? How do they affect your life, including work and relationships? #AutChat

#AutChat A3a: Like I said, the one that breaks through most is anger. But when I do the meditative focus and don't have anything pressing, the default is a sort of anticipatory melancholy. Like I'm mourning something that isn't entirely gone yet, but I know is on its way out.
Q3: Are there any emotions that you can access or explain more easily than others? Do you have a ‘default’ emotional state? #AutChat
November 23, 2025 at 9:30 PM
I think "access" and "explain" are different for me, unless it's an "explain to myself" situation.

Because frustration is the easiest for me to access, but maybe the hardest to explain to others.

But sometimes I'm not sure other people want to hear about my emotions.

This is an interesting question, and I don't know how much of this is autism and how much is ADHD, and I think there's elements of both perhaps?

When I'm in the middle of a situation, I'm less likely to be aware of my feelings in general.

Later on, I'll start to recognize them.

Q2: What does it take for you to become aware of an emotion that you usually have difficulty with recognising in yourself? #AutChat

#AutChat A2 - I need to intellectually process my emotions to realize what I'm feeling sometime. I definitely feel emotions, but sometimes I don't know what or why they are.
