I had to have a good think, and none, absolutely zero of my MCs play a sport of any kind 😅 I have a secondary character who does a bit of fencing, but it's not really for sport, but swordsmanship.
I have to do something about this in future WIPs, me thinks... 😆

Zaki is not really shy about any of his skills. But he did get flustered when Xhavann praised the comb he whittled. It was just something he did to occupy his hands with while keeping watch at night and he hadn't planned on sharing it.

Serara is good at singing and can belt out a tune when she's alone in the forest. But for some reason she chokes up when other are around and keeps making excuses; she's not trained, she's out of practice, etc. The only one she can sing to without feeling shy is Yan. ->

-> Zaki is an assassin/spy. He was on an information gathering job when he stumbled upon the Empire's lost prince. Most unexpected. The attempt to grab him failed and landed him in jail, from which he escaped after Serara treated his wounds. He retrieves Yan and is followed by Serara and Xhavann. ->

Queer-normative high fantasy world. Magic, monsters and gods. The place is the Zahndimian Empire, a southern continent with influences from Asian, African and Mayan cultures and myths. Most characters are human, but there are other races in the world. ->

If Serara, Zaki and Xhavann weren't there to protect Yan, it'd be up to Cayenne, Thistle and Saan. Between the three of them, they could pull it off, with mama bear Cayenne's strength and Thistle and Saan's magic. Karma would help with funding and negotiations.

Serara cares because she's a doctor. She wants to help. Yan is her patient, as is Xhavann. Staying alive is also one hell of a motivator.

Zaki sees Yan as a means to an end, and he cares for that end, but he also grows to care for the boy. And for Xhavann.
