Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Loretta Devine doesn’t get enough credit — 76 years young and still killing it in Hollywood. From Broadway to the big screen and TV, she’s a living legend who proves talent only gets sharper with time.

Yes AND It was one of the first books (for kids) that I've ever seen handle micro aggressions with such grace and humor. @jerrycraft.bsky.social is a genius. Bonafide! #TLSkyChat.

A2: The New Kid by Jerry Craft. Worth it because it called attention to a healthy, loving Black family adjusting through awkwardness of middle school. It's worth protecting b/c it was a mirror for Black kids and NOT a trauma-vampire story for our culture. #TLSkyChat

A4: As a director of school librarians, I didn't have a library-but I advocate via my consultant business & website. I write articles for journals. I contribute chapters to books focusing on censorship. I tell my banned story in speeches. I lead by example w/a 24/7 threat of being banned. #TLSkyChat

A3: I served as IFC chairperson to put my knowledge on the frontline. Who's on my team? Any and all of you: librarian, neighbor or concerned citizen. How do I protect the kids: organized their voices/frustrstions into tangible organizations & encourage them to their socials to advocate. #TLSkyChat

100%! I have questions about the teeth in some of these laws and whether or not they will hold up in court BUT I still think taking a stand matters A LOT - if for no other reason than it helps people on the front lines of these battles feel less alone. #TLSkyChat

A1: My pitch, "Psst, those banning books didn't read the book as a whol & waited to the last minute to finish their book report as kids. Their PTSD is manifesting as book banners now. Let's find our red pens & grade their performance. You in?" Said in my elevator spy voice. ;) #TLSkyChat

Reading Rainbow emphasis is encouraging kids to read. The focus is not on teaching them to read. The mission is reading should be fun!

We are all readers, worthy of literacy. LeVar Burton said “but you don’t have to take my word for it” because he wanted us to look to the books. That’s the beauty 💚

“I ain’t dead yet!” The dearly beloved Dolly Parton creates a “proof of life” video, assuring those who adore her that, even though she is dealing with some things, she is fine and still going strong 💛

Long live Dolly Parton ✨📚
