Hitting some actual winter temps here in Boston, plus cold and flu season (although the most dramatic children's room coughing has actually been from a kid who was sobbing so hard about a coloring page that she made herself choke 💀) so here's some related JC fluff for #Wednesday100!
Wednesday 100: In the Cold Midwinter She tells Jamie that it's just a bad cold caught from one of the grandchildren last week, which is true. It's also true that she feels terrible. Nevertheless, waking alone in bed, she stumbles toward the kitchen to feed Adso; it's part of her routine, so there's no reason for Jamie to think of it before leaving. And yet he's there, crouched to stroke down the soft back. "Go on, eat yer fill," he's saying. "And then get back up to yer mistress — keep those cold wee feet o' hers warm, aye?" Aching head, cracked throat and all, Claire smiles.

This one isn't my favorite #Wednesday100 tbh (can't totally decide if it's in character) but something nice happened at 10 AM and it made me want to do a Thanksgiving-y themed drabble so I postponed the planned one and knocked this one out instead
Wednesday 100: Small Blessings Dissections aside, Bree is perfectly handy with medicines. They mix and bottle companionably until Bree comments, "It's almost the end of November. Should I try to hunt down a turkey?" It's lightly said, yet Claire remembers those quiet Thanksgivings in Boston, gritting her teeth alongside Frank, trying to make things festive because Bree meant something to them even if the day didn't. It would be different here, busy with family and true gratitude, yet as she hugs her daughter to her side she says, "Only if you want to, darling. I'm finding bits of thanksgiving all the time these days."

Been a while since I was a real #Wednesday100 angst-monger, but I got caught by Claire's line to Geordie in 1x04 and created both some backstory and some frontstory for it - hooray?
Wednesday 100: Home and Away "Tell me about your home" — she'd learned that from a fellow nurse who'd served in 1918. She made variations over time — "what’s your sweetheart like?" and "what will you do once the war's over?" — but understood quickly that sometimes offering a hand and taking their minds elsewhere was, infuriatingly, all that she could even try. Screaming at the stones and dead-eyed on the road and overwhelmed in a hospital bed, it's her only thought: that as his body fell, she would not be there to hold Jamie's hand and help him dream to life the home they might have had.

Positing an unseen tradition for the characters in this #Wednesday100, after I saw a tumblr gifset and got mad again about the lack of recognition for Fergus as Claire's son, then realized that Bree would have some experiences/memories to share that he lacked and vice versa 💜
Wednesday 100: Lacunae "—but Milord only sighed and said that Geordie preferred a lady gently bred…and fully dressed." Bree laughs as Fergus finishes and the children play chase across the grass. On the rare occasions that they're alone together, they usually trade stories. In another life they'd have been raised as siblings, but instead she got Mama and he got Da — or at least what was left of them without each other. So they share words and memories, trying to fill the lack. She searches her mind for something new. "Once, our neighbor said Mama’s roses were getting too high and unsightly..."

Shabbat shalom from me and my...this. Experimented with a new citrus bar that's supposed be fudgy like a brownie — lime/zest plus lemon extract in the batter, glaze with lemon juice (did not work out as described!) and some macadamia nuts. Hopefully it's good because I need to use up more nuts!

Rewatched some early S1 this week and caught on Jamie's resistance to going with Claire for healing in 1x02, so for this #Wednesday100, let's delve into the POV of rough, independent grownup Jamie Fraser who's also btw just kinda sorta falling in love
Wednesday 100: Welcome Distraction He doesn't need her caring for him, truly. The bullet wound stings, her makeshift bandage growing ever filthier, and his shoulder is sore, but he's well enough — perfectly content to take his things and go find breakfast. Despite what this Mistress Beauchamp says, he's young and strong, has survived worse with no one taking special charge of him. He's slept rough, kept himself alive here at Leoch, managed alone for years now. And yet, when Mrs. Fitz orders him to be tended, he remembers those gentle, capable hands, those eyes in the darkness...and cannot say that he altogether minds.

"Though there was one year that Bree begged me and assembled a costume: a black dress, pointed hat, and the garden broom to make me a witch." He shakes slightly, suppressing laughter. First OG OL #Wednesday100 drabble in a while so of course I had to ease back in with Laird's Room, inspired by a vid I watched of a Scottish shepherd putting wee sweaters on his wee charges 🥰
Wednesday 100: Of Care "Maybe they'll come to Quarter Day, or for Hogmanay! And I'll show her the house, and introduce Mam and Da." "Papa can be frightening for les petites filles," Fergus reminds, patient through Bree's chattering description of her new school friend. "He's tall, and the laird besides." "Da's no' frightening!" He's a giant, but that means safety and protection. He's laird, but so he can care for them all. Even when he's cross, he isn't cruel. "I'll tell Marsali that he knits wee capes so the kids and calves willna be cold," Bree decides. "She canna be frightened of him then."

Last of these late night #Wednesday100 drabbles - or at least I hope...I was absolutely taken in the BOMB finale at the way that Uncle Lamb himself seemed so taken (understandably so!) with wee Claire, so I wanted to play that out a bit 😊
Wednesday 100: New Chapters Quentin never had particular interest in children. An occasional helpful lad guiding him to some fascinating cave, or the gaggle who would help fetch and carry at a dig site, but he hadn't patience for much else. He'd been back from Brazil four days before finally arranging to meet his infant niece. Henry looked drained but exultant, and he boggled at his brother’s transformation until Julia handed over their scrunch-faced newest Beauchamp, catching him with bright, enormous eyes. "Hullo, Claire," he whispered. "I think we'll be great chums." And he placed his little finger into her grasp alongside his heart.

Since we were on an episode break last week, I thought it might be fun to spend this #Wednesday100 pitching the idea of what if the time travel had been in another direction! (Is this one in the same universe as my Jamie and Julia go to church drabble? Could be, I guess?? Not determined!)
Wednesday 100: Alternate Though she's expecting only more green landscape, there are things that Julia wishes to find atop the hill: a warm, enormous meal; fresh clothes; a telephone — or, better yet, an automobile — to help them from the wilderness; a kind midwife who can reassure her that the baby is unharmed from the accident, something her own internal attempts haven't managed. What she gets is a strange noise, and a redheaded woman appearing on the ground, shielded by a dark-haired man wearing...gracious, is that a sword? What she gets is another upturning of the world, and the beginning of a new one.

Little Julia POV musing for #Wednesday100 about how much pretending she's had to do to keep herself and William alive, and how painful it would be to have to return to that and keep it up when escape is so close (obviously not all of that fit into 100 words, so here's more, the author lives, sorry!)
Wednesday 100: Parts As they ride to Leathers — ride back, never ride home — for what she prays is the last time, Julia feels as if she is barely contained within her own skin. She wishes she had William to ground her, but Lord Lovat ordered that the wet nurse take him in the wagon while Julia rides alongside him. She had gotten much of what she wanted at Braemar, and so much less too. And, she finds, after breaking herself open to Henry, to Ellen, it is so much harder to smooth that self away, to force on her mask of safety again.
