New publication out in #IJPP! 📑
We study how audience expectations of journalism 📰 shifted during COVID-19 in Austria 🇦🇹 – showing both short-term rally effects & longer-term recalibration 🔄.
Led by @clmron.bsky.social & @danielwiesner.bsky.social , w/ @andreasriedl.bsky.social & me. 1/n
Screenshot of an academic article titled “Rally and Recalibrate: Political Dynamics of Audience Expectations of Journalism During Times of Crisis” published in The International Journal of Press/Politics (OnlineFirst, Sage Journals).
Authors: Claire Roney, Daniel Wiesner, Andreas A. Riedl, and Jakob-Moritz Eberl.
The abstract explains that the study examines how audience expectations of journalism in Austria evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. It identifies shifts toward emerging journalistic roles such as Fact Checker and Science Communicator, based on data from three waves of the Austrian Corona Panel Project. Findings show fluctuating audience expectations tied to changes in public trust and crisis dynamics, emphasizing journalism’s need for adaptability.
Keywords listed: journalism, audience expectations, trust in institutions, crisis attitudes, survey research, COVID-19.

Misinformation researchers benefit from real-world insights. Practitioners benefit from scientific evidence on what interventions actually work. Our partnership with the media literacy & fact-checking organizations Learn to Check! and @maldita.es combines both 🤝

His research focuses on the social and
psychological uses and effects of
information communication technologies
(e.g., artificial intelligence, social media).
Specifically, he uses quantitative and
qualitative methods to study how people
1) negotiate online privacy decisions and
2) navigate digital inequalities challenges
in the constantly-shifting technological
landscape. He has published in flagship
journals such as Communication
Research, Communication Monographs,
New Media & Society, Information,
Communication & Society, and Journal of
Advertising. He has received prestigious
research awards such as the James J.
Bradac Award and the Steven H. Chaffee
Award for Excellence in Research. His

by various external (e.g., the National
Science Foundation, Washington Media
Scholars Foundation, and the
International Communication
Association) and internal funding sources
(e.g., UCSB’s African and Asian Students
in STEM program).

Abstract
The rapid advancement of digital
technologies presents significant
challenges for individuals seeking to
safeguard their personal information and
effectively navigate the digital
environment. This talk addresses these
challenges by drawing from psychological,
structural, and ecological perspectives.
Insights from three research projects
highlight that privacy management and
digital inequality are not merely matters of
individual choice, but are also embedded
in broader sociotechnical contexts. The
talk concludes by outlining future
theoretical and practical directions for
understanding and addressing the
intertwined issues of technology, privacy,
and inequality in the digital society.

NEW: Tonight, this is all that remains of Nepal's seat of government in Kathmandu.

Singha Durbar was the largest palace in Asia; home to the Prime Minister & government offices.

A 48-hour revolution, led by Gen Z protestors, has toppled the government & left large parts of the capital in flames.

Day 3 at #SSC2025 ☕️

@billrand.bsky.social invites us to think about the future of agent-based modeling. It’s not just about big data—it’s about building smarter, more interpretable models that bridge the gap between data-driven empiricism and theory-driven understanding.

Lots of food for thought🙇🏻‍♀️
